Edwin Su, is a Taiwanese-American orthopaedic joint replacement surgeon specializing in reconstructive orthopaedic surgery of the hip and knee joints.[1] He is particularly known for minimally invasive surgical techniques that preserve bone and enhance the recovery process, such as hip resurfacing, direct anterior approach total hip, and partial knee replacements. He also performs total hip replacements (THR) and total knee replacements (TKR) and revisions of THR and TKR. He is the first surgeons at the Hospital for Special Surgery to perform direct anterior THR and outpatient joint replacement surgery.[2][3]

Early life and education[edit]

Su was born to Wen-Huey Su, PhD and Philip Su, MD, Taiwanese natives who emigrated to the United States for their advanced training. He grew up in Huntington, New York, and attended public high school at Half Hollow Hills HS East, where he was salutatorian.[4] He holds a bachelor’s degree in Biological Sciences from Harvard University and an MD from Cornell Medical College. He completed his internship in general surgery at New York Presbyterian Hospital and his residency in orthopaedic surgery at the Hospital for Special Surgery, New York. Su concluded his fellowship in adult reconstruction at the Hospital for Special Surgery, New York.[3]

Career[edit]

Su started his professional career at the Hospital for Special Surgery in 2003 as a member of the Adult Reconstruction and Joint Replacement division. He received special training in the hip resurfacing technique with Dr. Harlan Amstutz, who was one of the originators of the procedure. Su then brought hip resurfacing surgery to the Hospital for Special Surgery in 2004, performing the first procedure of its kind at the institution. In 2006, as a principal investigator, he contributed to the ten-year study of the first FDA-approved hip resurfacing implant, the Birmingham Hip Resurfacing (BHR). Since that time, Su has become one of the highest-volume hip resurfacing surgeons in the world. He has also been a prolific researcher, advancing the field of joint replacement surgery through scientific studies.[5] Su was elected into the European Hip Society in 2019. Su was promoted to full professor of Clinical Orthopaedics at Weill Cornell Medical College in 2020. He also holds the position of Attending Orthopaedic Surgeon at the Hospital for Special Surgery in the adult reconstruction and joint replacement division. He became the director of the division’s fellowship program in 2020. He was inducted into the American Hip Society, a prestigious organization that recognizes members for their contributions to the advancement of the understanding of the hip joint, in 2021. The same year, he was invited to address the South African Arthroplasty Association and awarded the Louis Solomon lectureship for his work in hip resurfacing.

In 2022, Su was invested as the Richard S Laskin Chair for Musculoskeletal Research and Education at Hospital for Special Surgery. He remains active with his clinical practice and research in the field of joint replacement and is known to have operated on a number of celebrities, such as Christie Brinkley,[6] Lara Spencer,[7] Nathan Lane, and Patti Lupone.
