Eliza Barry Callahan (born June 26, 1995) is an American writer, filmmaker and musician. Her first novel, The Hearing Test, was published in 2024.[1] She teaches in the writing program at Columbia University. In 2023, she was named a New York Foundation for The Arts fellow.[2] [3]

Early Life

Callahan was born and raised in New York City. She attended St. Ann's School in Brooklyn[4] and then Columbia University where she studied Visual Art.[5] She later received her MFA from Columbia where she worked closely with essayist and novelist Kate Zambreno.[6]

Career

The Hearing Test was widely reviewed in the United States and United Kingdom.

Publisher's Weekly gave the book a starred review and called it a "magnificent stream of consciousness narrative" and Kirkus referred to her as “a writer of unusual talents and profound preoccupations: a literary newcomer to watch.”[7][8][9] The novel drew comparisons to W.G. Seabald and Rachel Cusk in The New Yorker.[10] Author Amy Hempel referred to the novel as "a contemplative gem."[3] The novel received five stars from The Telegraph [2]as well as positive reviews and write ups in The Times Literary Supplement[6], The Guardian[11], Vanity Fair.[12]

Her fiction and criticism have appeared in BOMB, The Paris Review, frieze, The Brooklyn Rail.[13]
