Elven Technologies[edit]

Elven Technologies is a startup founded in the spring of 2019 that develops lithium-ion battery fireproof enclosures for EVs & energy storage systems.[1]

History[edit]

Elven Technologies was founded in Georgia in the spring of 2019 by Vamekh Kherkheulidze, Giorgi Gabarashvili, Sandro Chubinidze and Bela Butskhrikidze. The company initially focused on developing Extravehicular Activity (EVA) suits for astronauts, aiming to improve mobility, durability, and adaptability in space. During their research, the team discovered that their composite material, designed for insulation, also had fireproof properties. The company then attempted to develop firefighter suits using this material.[2][3][4]

In 2021, Elven Technologies relocated its headquarters to the United States and redirected its focus to creating fireproof enclosures for lithium-ion batteries. This shift aimed to address the safety needs of the growing EV and energy storage industries.[5][6]

Traction[edit]

Extensive testing conducted by independent third-party labs, including the Rochester Institute of Technology, UC Berkeley, and Iowa State University, validated the composite's performance. Notably, the material doesn't melt or drip when exposed to extreme temperatures and maintains its fire-blocking and low thermal conductivity properties even after enduring a 2000°C flame for over 15 minutes.[7].[8]

  • In 2023, Elven Technologies began pilot projects with Auvetech, an Estonian startup that manufactures self driving e-buses, and Alef Aero, a startup specializing in electric vertical takeoff and landing (eVTOL) aircraft.
  • The company's enclosure technology was featured in market research by IdTechEx, specifically in the report "Fire Protection Materials for EV Batteries 2024-2034: Markets, Trends, and Forecasts."
  • In the spring of 2024, Elven Technologies embarked on its first paid pilot project with LTA, a startup funded by Sergey Brin.

Elven Technologies' primary product is a fireproof composite. The composite is flexible and lightweight and offers several key advantages:

  • It can withstand temperatures exceeding 2000 degrees Celsius, exceeding the peak temperature of a lithium battery fire
  • The material has very low thermal conductivity[9]
  • Compared to its protective capabilities, the composite boasts a low weight and remains flexible, making it suitable for various applications
