The Environmental Information System (ENVIS) Scheme is implemented by the Environmental Information (El) Division and The first Centre was set up on 28.09.1983 with data collection, collation, and storage capabilities, ENVIS functions as a one-stop, web-enabled repository for complete environmental information.[2]

Since its establishment, ENVIS has focused on delivering environmental information to decision-makers, policy planners, scientists and engineers, researchers, and others around the country.[3] ENVIS network at present consists of a chain of 69 network partners out of which 40 are on subject-specific and 29 on State/UT related issues. These network partners are called ENVIS Centers and are located in notable organizations/institutions/State/UT Government Departments/Universities throughout the country.[4][5] The focal point of ENVIS is located in the Ministry and assists the Environment Information (EI) Division in coordinating the activities of all the ENVIS network partners by making ENVIS a web-enabled comprehensive information system.[6][7]

The MoEF&CC also distributed the award of the best State ENVIS centre to Forests, Environment & Wildlife Management Department, Sikkim and the award for the best Thematic ENVIS Centre to the Indian Institute of Science, Bengaluru.[4]

ENVIS Centre of Annamalai University CAS in Marine Biology was awarded the Best ENVIS Centre Award 2006 during the National Workshop of ENVIS Centres - 2006, held in Shimla from October 12 to 14, 2006. The award, issued by the Ministry of Environment and Forests, Government of India, includes a trophy and a cash reward of Rs. 50,000.[8][9][10]

The logo designed by the ENVIS Centre (Centre of Advanced Studies in Marine Biology, Annamalai University) was selected as the Best Logo in a competition conducted in 2004 by the Ministry of Environment and Forests, Government of India.[11][10]
