Evil is a song written and performed by singer-songwriter Melanie Martinez. It is the twelfth track[2][3] and third-single of her[a] third album "Portals". It was released in 31 March 2023, and re-released in April 5, 2023 as part of the deluxe edition. It became the third single the same day its visualizer came out in November 21, 2023.[citation needed]

The snippet of the song was first circulated March 10, 2023.[1] This song was fully performed in Lollapalooza in March 18, 2023.[4]

Background and lyrics[edit]

On March 10, 2023, there was first circulated snippet of this track. In March 14, 2023, Martinez posted a 53-second Instagram reel with the caption saying, "remember when you smiled right to my face, as all my little tears of oxalate, they made a shape, revealed a snake, now I'm stop drop rolling over all your jokes, every time you tell a lie I'm praying that you choke, should've listened to the signs and the horoscopes, hope you never cope, hope you slip on soap, crack your head like an egg wanna see the yolk, you were such a hoax 🧚‍♀️"[5] that is confirmed to be some of the lyrics of the track with the video playing the pre-chorus and chorus of the track. 4 days later, Martinez posted the tracks of her upcoming album and was revealed that this track is the twelfth or second to the last track of the album.[6] On the same day, it was fully performed in Lollapalooza Argentina.[4] In March 31, 2023, this was officially released.

In November 21, 2023, this was become a third-single of the Portals with the same time when the visualizer of the track released.[citation needed]

Some speculated[by whom?] that this song is about her toxic relationship with Oliver Tree.[7]

Melanie stated that, "It’s about dealing with a narcissist who ironically calls you evil just because you’re able to see through their bullshit."[8] and that it is her favorite conflict song.[8][9]
