Eyal Muscal, MD, MS
Eyal Muscal (born 1971) is a pediatric rheumatologist known for his contributions to the field of pediatric rheumatology and his expertise in neurologic manifestations of rheumatic disorders. He currently serves as the Division Chief of Pediatric Rheumatology and holds the Pawelek Endowed Chair of Pediatric Rheumatology at Baylor College of Medicine. Additionally, he has a co-appointment in Child Neurology and Developmental Neuroscience at Baylor College of Medicine where he is a Professor of Pediatrics specializing in Pediatric Rheumatology.
Early Life and Education
Eyal Muscal was born in 1971 in Israel to Ruth, a colonel in the Israel Defense Forces and Zvi, a financial executive. At the age of 8, he moved with his family to Philadelphia. He attended high at Jack M. Barrack Hebrew Academy, where he played basketball as a small forward for the varsity team for three years. Muscal pursued his undergraduate education at Brown University, where he earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1993. He then went on to complete his Doctor of Medicine (MD) at Jefferson Medical College.
Following medical school, Muscal completed an internship and residency in Pediatrics at Children's Hospital-Pittsburgh. He then pursued a fellowship in Pediatric Rheumatology at Baylor College of Medicine, where he received additional specialized training in the field. In 2008, Muscal obtained a Master of Science in Clinical Research from the University of Texas Health Science at Houston, further enhancing his research skills.
Career
Eyal Muscal's career has been dedicated to patient care, fellowship education, and clinical research in the field of pediatric rheumatology. His clinical interests primarily revolve around the neurologic manifestations of rheumatic disorders, with a focus on novel and auto-inflammatory mechanisms of neuroinflammatory diseases. Throughout his career, Muscal has received grant funding and research awards for pilot research studies. He previously served as the Pediatric Rheumatology Program Director and led a national pediatric rheumatology-mentoring project. Currently, he has been the Division Chief of Pediatric Rheumatology at Baylor College of Medicine for four years.
Professional Affiliations and Recognition
Muscal has been actively involved in rheumatology and pediatric medicine professional organizations. He has served as the Previous Co-Director of AMIGO (ACR, CARRA Mentoring Interest Group) and as a Previous Early Career Investigator Sub-committee member of the American College of Rheumatology. He is also a voting member and co-director of the Inflammatory Brain Disease Workgroup at the Childhood Arthritis and Rheumatology Research Alliance (CARRA) and a Medical Advisory Board Member of the NORSE Institute.
Personal Life
Eyal Muscal is married to Jodi, who is also a physician, and together they are parents to two daughters. Muscal plays basketball and pursuing his interests in photography and culinary arts.
