Lliam Bishop Evans (born July 14, 1995), known musically as Flakestate, is an American record producer, musician, and designer from Winter Park. His first original recorded song is a short piano piece called "Messages In The Snow" and was released for free on SoundCloud in 2012.[1].

Lliam created the Flakestate music project in 2014 at the age of 18 while attending high school. The name "Flakestate" is a made up meta concept inspired by the mysteries of reality, and is comprised of two words: "flake" (as in flake of snow) and "state" (as in state of the art). As stated on the "About" page of the official Flakestate website[2], Flakestate is a musical narrative that tries to make sense of the natural world, human connection, and the meaning of being conscious in general.

The name "Flakestate" is often stylized using a reversed letter F followed by a degree symbol (ᖷlakestate°)[3] . The name "Flakestate" has also been represented by the two special characters alone (ᖷ°)[4] which resembles a mirrored degree Fahrenheit symbol. This is depicted in the original Flakestate logo created by Lliam in 2016[5], and various other artistic examples throughout the years.

Early Life[edit]

Lliam Bishop Evans was born in the state of Florida. He is the only child to parents of German and Irish ancestry. Lliam grew up in Winter Springs, Florida until he was 11 years old. In 2006, his family moved to Oviedo, Florida where he lived for ten years. In 2016, Lliam moved to Winter Park, Florida to work and attend night classes at Rollins College where he studied Music Theory and Art History. He discontinued his tuition later that same year and did not receive a degree.

Career[edit]

2005 - 2012: Lliam (Primordial Works)[edit]

The earliest known recording of Lliam Bishop Evans interacting with a musical instrument is an instructional drum video posted on the popular video streaming website YouTube. The video entitled "(2005) The Official Drum Instructional Video"[6] (runtime 00:11:41) was uploaded on July 14th, 2018 using his own YouTube account and features a 10-year-old Lliam performing on a tiny blue drum kit. The description of the video states that the footage was recorded in the year 2005 using an old VHS camera.

Lliam's first publicly available endeavor into music production, predating Flakestate by 4 years, was a piano cover of the song Reign of Love by the popular British rock band Coldplay. The cover was recorded in 2010 and is still public on his SoundCloud account.

2012 - 2014: Lluminus Demos[edit]

Two years before Flakestate existed, Lliam worked on music using the online moniker "Lluminus". He operated under this name for about 2 years, releasing minor demos and experimental tracks on a free music streaming platform called SoundCloud. Many of these early pieces can still be found on his account, including "Bryte Cyan Lytes" from 2012, and "Kill Your Demons" from 2013.

A YouTube account belonging to Lliam called "lluminusex"[7] features 3 original music videos for his own songs "Bryte Cyan Lytes" (September 23, 2012)[8], "Get The Keys & Go" (November 1, 2012)[9] and "Arrows Through Auroras" (July 9, 2013)[10]

2014 - 2019: The Reverse Fahrenheit EP and Demos[edit]

In July of 2014, Flakestate made its official debut with the single release of "Just Fine"[11]. This was subsequently followed up by the release of "Haunt"[12] as a stripped down acoustic version in October of 2014. The electronic rock song was first published on the free music streaming platforms SoundCloud and ReverbNation, before later being distributed to Spotify and Apple Music in 2015 as a finished song featuring drums. Within that same year, "Haunt" would be included in a 3-track EP released exclusively to SoundCloud called "ᖷ ° EP" alongside the aforementioned "Just Fine", and a short remix "Haunt (Reprise)". This EP would later be replaced with "The Reverse Fahrenheit EP" officially released on July 14, 2017[13]. The EP was distributed to various music platforms including Spotify and Apple Music featuring an additional opening track called "No Matter". This new opening track offers a relatively different lofi approach, and also differs from the other three song's mixing style. This is the only track on the EP featuring a curse word and as a result it is labeled explicit on streaming platforms.

The release of "The Reverse Fahrenheit EP" coincides with a high school graduation trip Lliam went on with his parents to go backpacking throughout various countries in Europe from June 15 to July 5 of 2014. This trip was made into a vlog style documentary called "Backpacking Across Europe"[14] or "B.A.E" (runtime 2:09:22) completely filmed and edited by Lliam himself. The documentary features original soundtrack music written by Flakestate, and also a track called "Superbia" from the Deadmau5 album "While(1<2)" (2014). Lliam uploaded the documentary to YouTube on 6 January 2017. This trip had a lasting impact on Lliam and inspired what Flakestate would eventually become.

The cover art for "The Reverse Fahrenheit EP" was created by Lliam himself and features an edited photograph of him standing in front of a heavily Photoshopped mountain range from his 2014 backpacking trip to Switzerland. The exact geographical location can be seen in the aforementioned documentary around the 8:00 minute mark.[15]

"The Reverse Fahrenheit EP" would go on be released as a limited-edition CD in 2019[16], featuring a booklet insert with exclusive photography and packaging designed by Lliam himself. This is the first independent physical release by Flakestate.

2020 - 2024: I Was Wrong To Assume - In Alternate Moments[edit]

Flakestate burst into the 2020's with the single "I Was Wrong To Assume" as a way to cap off the previous 6 years of his music career and begin the "In Alternate Moments" album narrative. The Alternative Rock single "I Was Wrong To Assume" was released on January 1, 2020[17] and has a runtime of 00:05:15.

Three years later in 2023, Flakestate releases two singles; "Sun Bleached Print" on January 11, 2023[18] and "MAKE TIME" on March 23, 2023[19]. These two singles are the precursors to the eventual release of Flakestate's debut studio album "In Alternate Moments".
