Freedom Square (Georgian: თავისუფლების მოედანი, romanized: tavisuplebis moedani) is a political party and political movement in Georgia founded by political scientist and civic activist Levan Tsutskiridze.[1]
History
[edit]On July 1, Levan Tsutskiridze announced the formation of a new political movement, "Freedom Square", with members including Bakur Kvashilava, Simon Janashia, Davit Gzirishvili, Oktai Kazumov, Irma Zoidze, Zurab Parjiani, and Giorgi Shaishmelashvili.[2][3][4]
Tsutskiridze, formerly the Executive Director of the Eastern European Centre for Multiparty Democracy,[5] was prominent during protests against the "foreign agents' law" and organized public debates on various topics.[6]
The movement advocates for change in the upcoming October 26 parliamentary elections, supports the Georgian Charter[7] offered by President Salome Zourabichvili,[8] and seeks to unite rather than divide the political space.
The movement's manifesto commits to protecting Georgia's national interests, achieving EU membership, and defeating the Georgian Dream through elections, emphasizing democracy, economic development, healthcare, education, and environmental protection.[9] It pledges cooperation with civil society groups and political parties, advocating for peaceful and constitutional methods of struggle.[10]
On July 17, Freedom Square, Lelo for Georgia and For the People announced their unification under a single election list for the upcoming elections in October.[11][12] Subsequently, the alliance was named "Strong Georgia".
