Mixed martial arts record from Sherdog

Garrett Armfield (born October 9, 1996) is an American mixed martial artist who competes in the Bantamweight division in the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC). He is a former Fighting Alliance Championship Bantamweight Champion [3] and a 2014 St. Louis Golden Gloves Champion. Armfield holds a black belt in Karate and a purple Belt in Brazilian jiu-jitsu.

Personal life and background

[edit]

Armfield was born in Eureka, Missouri. He started training in karate at the age of four and earned his black belt at the age of 13. He started kickboxing at age seven after watching his older brother, Clayton, take a kickboxing class at USA Martial Arts Academy in Eureka.[4] Armfield graduated from Eureka High School, where he competed in wrestling throughout his four years.[5]

In 2016, he started training in Brazilian jiu-jitsu and mixed martial arts at Springfield Fight Club in Springfield, Missouri.[6] In 2019, he earned a bachelor's degree in business administration with a minor in healthcare administration at Missouri State University.[4]

Mixed martial arts career

[edit]

Early career

[edit]

Armfield began his mixed martial arts career as an amateur from 2015 to 2018, compiling a record of 6-1, with four of his victories coming by way of first-round knockout[7][8][9][10]. After losing his final amateur fight to future UFC fighter David Onama by decision[11], Armfield turned professional.

In August 2018, Armfield made his professional debut at Pyramid Fighting Championship, where he defeated Shane Bridges by first-round technical knockout via ground and pound[12]. He then fought Joe Estrada at Walkout FC in Springfield, Missouri, winning by knockout 11 seconds into the first round, extending his professional record to 2-0[13]. In his third professional bout, he faced future UFC bantamweight Ronnie Lawrence at Legacy Fighting Alliance. Armfield lost the fight by unanimous decision, bringing his record to 2-1[14].

In 2019, Armfield relocated to Fort Lauderdale, Florida, to train at the MMA camp KillCliff FC[15]. From 2019 to 2022, he competed for various promotions[16], most notably Cage Fury Fighting Championships[17][18], climbing his professional record to 7-2[19].

In May 2022, Armfield fought for the Fighting Alliance Championship Bantamweight title, winning by knockout 33 seconds into the first round and claiming the FAC 135lb Championship.[20]

Ultimate Fighting Championship

[edit]

In July 2022, Garrett Armfield received a short-notice call-up to sign with the Ultimate Fighting Championship and rematch UFC featherweight David Onama at UFC Vegas 58, replacing Austin Lingo, who had pulled out due to injury a week before the fight[21][22][23][24]. Armfield lost the fight via submission in the second round.[25][26][27]

After a year-long layoff, Armfield moved back to Missouri to train at Marathon MMA, led by Trey Ogden, in Overland Park, Kansas.[28] In August 2023, he fought at UFC Singapore, where he defeated Toshiomi Kazama by knockout at 4:16 of the first round.[23][29][30][28]

Armfield faced two time Ultimate Fighter winner Brad Katona on January 20, 2024, at UFC 297. He won the fight by unanimous decision.[31][32][33] In March 2024, Armfield had signed a new four fight deal with the UFC.

Armfield fought Brady Heistand on June 15, 2024 at UFC Fight Night 243. He lost the bout in the third round via submission (rear-naked choke).[34][35] He is scheduled to fight Ukrainian-born Canadian fighter Serhiy Sidey at UFC Edmonton on November 2. [36]
