Gladys Justin Carr, Prominent Publishing Executive and Poet 1933- 2023

Gladys Justin Carr was a major presence in contemporary literature as an executive editor, and poet. Her publishing career included vice president and associate publisher with her own imprint (Gladys Justin Carr Books) at HarperCollins, editor-in-chief of hard-cover trade books and editorial board chairperson of McGraw Hill's General Books Division. Among authors she represented were Erma Bombeck; Anthony Burgess; James Baldwin and Bel Kaufman.

A three-time Pushcart Prize Poetry nominee, winner of the Quartet Chapbook Prize, and recipient of a California Poetry Society award, her poetry has appeared in over 100 literary magazines and journals. The Gladys Justin Carr Legends Internship Program at Smith College assists aspiring poets.

Prior to joining Harper Collins, she was editor-in-chief of hard-cover trade books and chairperson of the editorial board of the General Books Division at McGraw Hill Publishing Company, where she signed on some of the company’s most profitable authors, including Anthony Burgess, James Baldwin, and Erma Bombeck. Albert Goldman’s book, “Elvis,” a book commissioned by Ms. Carr, produced a $1 million paperback sale, which at the time was the most ever paid for the paperback rights to a biography.

Her rise to stardom in publishing began as junior editor at Prentice Hall, when she took a relatively unknown author, Bel Kaufman, to lunch to discuss turning a 3 ½ page short story Ms. Kaufman had written for the Saturday Review of Literature, into a novel. The result was the classic novel, “Up the Down Staircase,” which became a best-seller for 64 weeks, was No. 1 on the charts for five months, went through 47 printings, was translated into 16 languages, and was made into a film.

After retiring from Harper Collins, she concentrated on creative writing and became an award-winning poet, published in over 100 literary magazines and journals. A three-time Pushcart Prize nominee, winner of the Quartet Chapbook Prize, and recipient of a California Poetry Society award, she was the author of the chapbook, Augustine’s Brain – the Remix.

Born in Brooklyn, New York in 1933, Ms Carr graduated magna cum laude with an election to Phi Beta Kappa from Brooklyn College in 1954. She earned a Masters of Arts in English at Smith College and was the Nicolson Trustee Fellow. The Gladys Justin Carr Legends Internship Program at Smith still assists aspiring poets. Pursuing a doctorate degree in English at Cornell University, she was the Wilcox Fellow.
