About

[edit]

Brothers Edwin and Robert Grabhorn arrived in San Francisco in 1919 from Indiana. The printers quickly made a name for themselves, producing works for Albert Bender, Random House, and the Book Club of California and established the bibliophilic field of Californiana.[1] Their work was inline with the Arts and Crafts movement but were distinct in their variety, quality, and quantity. In December 1965, the Grabhorn Press closed later joining with Andrew Hoyem to form Grabhorn-Hoyem, that lasted until 1973.[2]

Collection

[edit]

After Daniel Berkeley Updike's book Printing Types came out in 1937,[3] Robert Grabhorn used the text to begin collecting rare books on the history of printing. His collection is considered "one of the country's most impressive libraries on printing history."[1] A majority of the collection was donated to the San Francisco Public Library in 1965.[1]

Recognition

[edit]

Edwin and Robert Grabhorn were awarded the American Institute of Graphic Arts (AIGA) gold medal in 1926. Their work was included in a 1945 exhibition at the Huntington Library and a traveling exhibition organized by the Smithsonian Institution from 1961 to 1963.[2]
