Grandlaugh is a underground style of music that emerged in the 2020s that combines various forms of electronic experimental music with comedic lyrics and sampling inspired by Internet meme and Shitposting culture[1]. it is most often combined with other genres, most common of which being Electronic dance music. But it is also often combined with Hip hop, Alternative rock, and more.
Characteristics[edit]
Grandlaugh can take the form of many genres but the style remains the same. It experiments with several techniques only possible with Digital audio workstations, Such as erratic melodies that would be impossible to play on real instruments. Real instruments aren't used often and when they are they often are Freely improvised. Grandlaugh also makes use of Noise in music often, with some grandlaugh tracks even getting into Harsh noise wall territory.
Vocals mostly are somewhere in-between singing and Spoken word. lyrics are about Absurdist humor and often feature internet memes
All of this is to make the music sound more erratic and chaotic and sometimes to even purposely annoy the listener
Origin of the term[edit]
The term was first coined by one of the two founders of the Netlabel "Record Records" but the style existed beforehand. Gwennylol and rosa founded several short-lived netlabels before creating record records[2] which is still releasing music to this day through Bandcamp[3]
The term originally started out as just "Shitpost music that's meant to be real music" but it started to develop a more specific style as the netlabel put out more and more releases.
The term has since spread outside of records records with an underground scene of grandlaugh artists forming on Bandcamp and through Discord servers
Aesthetic[edit]
The aesthetic of the genre reflect that of the lyrics. With cover art often being made of absurd Shitpost images or Ms paint style crude drawings.
