Greater Nairobi is monocentric urban conurbation in Kenya centred around Nairobi City and is coterminous with the Nairobi Metropolitan Area. The built up area of the region had a population of about 6,948,348 in the 2019 Census with estimates putting the population to over 8,000,000 in 2024 making in the largest urban conurbation is East Africa and the fifth largest urban area in Africa by population after Metropolitan Lagos in Nigeria, Greater Cairo in Egypt, Kinshasa in the DRC and Gauteng in South Africa. The built up region ranges from Isinya in the south through Kitengela, Athi River and the whole of Mavoko municipality through Nairobi County and encompasses Ruiru municipality, Kikuyu municipality, Ngong Municipality, Rongai town and Kiserian town. The Nairobi Metropolitan Area Transport Authority is a state corporation that was established by an executive order in 2017 [1] with the main mandate of overseeing the establishment of an integrated, efficient, effective and sustainable public transport system within the region. It loosely acts as the single administrative authority of the region.

Economy
The Greater Nairobi area has the largest GDP of any urban area in East Africa and one of the highest of any urban area in Africa. Of the four most industrialized urban areas in Kenya, three are located within the Greater Nairobi Area (Nairobi City, Thika and Athi River) with only Mombasa being outside the region. Nairobi City is a leading financial centre in Africa and home to international company regional headquarters such as General Electric, Google, Coca Cola, IBM, etc and also serves as the host for UN Environment and UN Habitat headquarters.
