Hauwa Mohammed Liman was a Nigerian nurse and humanitarian worker who served with the International Committee of the Red Cross. She was abducted by Boko Haram militants in March 2018 and executed on October 15, 2018.[1][2]
Early Life and Education
[edit]Hauwa Liman was born in 1994 in Maiduguri, Borno State, Nigeria. Hauwa was a registered nurse and student of Health Education at the University of Maiduguri.
Career
[edit]After completing her training, Hauwa Liman joined the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) as a midwife.[3][4][5]
Hauwa’s work with the International Committee of the Red Cross took her to various conflict-affected areas, where she provided essential medical care to women and children. Her colleagues often spoke of her as a beacon of hope and resilience.[6]
Abduction and Execution
[edit]In March 2018, Hauwa Liman, along with two other health workers, Saifura Hussaini Ahmed Khorsa and Alice Loksha, was abducted by Boko Haram militants during an attack on the town of Rann in Borno State.[7][8]
Hauwa Liman was executed by Boko Haram on October 15, 2018. Her death was widely condemned as a war crime and a violation of international humanitarian law. The Nigerian government under the leadership of Muhammadu Buhari and various international organizations expressed their shock and sadness over her killing.[9][10][11][12]
