James Daniel Marrs Ritchey (born 21 April 1989)[2] is a Canadian,[3] actor,[4] musician,[5] director,[1] cinematographer,[6] television host,[7] script writer,[8] stand-up comedian,[9] and influencer[10] who is best known for hosting the television series Glorious North.[11]

Personal life

[edit]

Despite applying twice to the Canadian Armed Forces,[12] he has never served.[13]

Education

[edit]

He graduated from Prince George Secondary School in 2007,[14] and since then has studied New Media[15] at the University of Lethbridge,[16] and English[17] at Athabasca University.[18] He is also an alumnus of the Justice Institute of British Columbia,[19] and Careerstep.[20]

Family

[edit]

Ritchey has one younger sibling.[21] His sister was a co-founder of Vancouver Island Voices for Eating Disorders. [22] James's great grandparents Lionel Marrs and Hilda Marrs (née Armour) immigrated to Canada from Great Britain in 1912.[23] In the end, they settled on Vancouver Island, British Columbia,[24] approximately 600 kilometers from Ritchey's home town of Prince George.[25]

Social Media Presence

[edit]

On social media Ritchey is most well known for his application to season 5 of Big Brother Canada. While his application was declined,[26] his vlog about applying received a great deal of attention,[27] including over 220,000 views,[28] making it his most watched YouTube video at the time.

He has deleted many of the videos from his YouTube channel.[29] In late 2016 he deleted most of the videos from his YouTube channel,[30] notably including "57. Current Chart - Y2016M7D24",[31] the source of the Heartbroken Cowboy meme.[32] The Heartbroken Cowboy meme entry on Know Your Meme received over 125,000 views[33] within the first 9 months,[34] and its template is available on most meme generators.[35]

Ritchey's DeviantArt profile[36] has received over 180,000 views,[37] and his artwork "March Whiteout" notably received over 20,000 views in its first month on DeviantArt.[38]

As of September 2024, Ritchey had 90,733 karma points on Reddit, 38,234 as post karma, 35,601 as comment karma, and the remainder in award karma.[39]

Open Source Contributions

[edit]

Ritchey's involvement in the open source community has included creating free software licenses[11], developing open source projects, and running websites related to open source topics.

Websites

[edit]

On 10 December 2018, Christin Löhner announced the Linux Counter project would end, citing lack of time and user interest.[40] In 2019 Ritchey launched Lius as a replacement.[41] By 2020 the site had 324,048 users.[11] In mid 2020 Ritchey announced Lius would be shutting down so that he could focus his time on other pursuits.[42]

[edit]

He has authored several free licenses most of which are permissive, or copyleft in nature. The most well established is the Ritchey Permissive License, which is a permissive license designed for open source projects.
