Jay Cameron Ruckley (born September 6, 1998) is a Welsh former child actor, appearing initially in stage productions and later on television.

Early life[edit]

Ruckley was born in Barry, South Wales, the son of Jake and Faye Ruckley. He attended the All Saints Church in Wales Primary School.

Early stage career[edit]

At the age of seven, Ruckley was chosen by his model agency Mustard to represent Hubba Bubba gum. Ruckley had not attended stage school nor had any singing lessons, but at the age of eight, after his parents responded to a newspaper advertisement, he starred as Tiny Tim in the Wales Theatre Company’s production of A Christmas Carol in December 2006, starring alongside Ron Moody. In January 2007, he won the role of Jeremy Potts in a production of Chitty Chitty Bang Bang at the Bristol Hippodrome, having queued in rain to audition for five hours. Ruckley went on to tour the UK in a production of Mary Poppins as Michael Banks.

Grandpa in My Pocket[edit]

At the age of ten, Ruckley successfully auditioned to be cast as Jason Mason, a major character in a television comedy drama named Grandpa in My Pocket, which featured a boy’s adventures with his mischievous Grandpa, who owned a magic cap which made him shrink to around 4 inches tall. Grandpa was portrayed by James Bolam, and Jason, who was the only person to know about the shrinking cap, narrated each adventure.

Grandpa in My Pocket was broadcast on CBeebies and was first aired in February 2009. Following the success of the first series in April 2009, a second was commissioned in March 2010, with a third filmed in 2011. After the third season, the series was assumed to have ended, but two years later, a fourth season went into production, and began broadcast in 2014. Ruckley had appeared in all 66 episodes of the first three series. The final season in 2014 introduced some changes to the plot, with Ruckley, now a 15 year old, portraying Jason Mason as a recurring character with his role as series narrator being replaced by two younger actors, Harvey Thorn and Sezen Djouma who portrayed Jason’s younger cousins Josh and Elsie after Grandpa decided to let them in on the secret of the shrinking cap.

Other television work[edit]

In addition to Grandpa in My Pocket, Ruckley appeared in four episodes of medical drama Casualty during 2010, portraying Sam Marshall. Ruckley played Mungo Mole in science fiction television series The Sparticle Mystery (2011). Ruckley was also part of a cameo cast of The Itch of the Golden Nit (2011), an animated adventure film, providing one of the voices.

Personal life[edit]

Ruckley's last IMDB credit was in 2014. He later began a career in Process Technology.
