Jayess Newbiggin Brass Band is a traditional British brass band based in Newbiggin-by-the-Sea, Northumberland, England.
The current band was formed in 2009.[1] and named after the Newbiggin born cornet player James Shepherd, who served as their President from 2009-2023.
However, there is evidence of an early brass band in Newbiggin-by-the-Sea in the 19th century[2] when the village was primarily a fishing port. The Newbiggin Colliery opened between 1908-1910 and operated until 1968[3]. The Newbiggin Colliery Band was formed soon after the colliery opened in 1913[2].
Since then there have been a number of brass bands associated with Newbiggin-by-the-Sea: Lynemouth Colliery Band (1968-1985), Newbiggin Welfare Band, 1985-1995, and most notably Greggs Bakery Band, 1995-2009, which competed at the top Championship level of brass bands[4].
In 2016[5] and 2017[6] Jayess Newbiggin Brass Band won the North of England Regional Brass Band Championship in the Fourth Section and were promoted to the Third Section in 2018
In 2022 the band won the North of England Regional Brass Band Championship in the Third Section[7] and subsequently represented the Region at the National Championships held later the same year in Cheltenham where the band finished in second place[8]
The band wonthe North of England Regional Brass Band Championship in the Third Section again in 2023[9] and from 2024 compete in the Second Section.
