Jeremy DePrez (born 1983) is an American contemporary visual artist known for using painting as a tool to explore everyday objects and the boundaries of material culture. DePrez's work engages with contemporary cultural critique, transforming mundane objects into surreal, speculative representations that explore the intersection of identity, material culture, and the uncanny. [1]

Early life and education

[edit]

Jeremy DePrez was born in Portland, Maine in 1983, and pursued his undergraduate and graduate studies at the University of Houston, earning a Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA) in Painting in 2007 and a Master of Fine Arts (MFA) in Painting in 2011.

Work

[edit]

Using painting to recontextualize familiar items like clothing, packaging remnants, and other objects from his everyday surroundings, DePrez investigates the tension between what is recognizable and the seemingly unfamiliar. [2] These objects—distorted, fragmented, and/or exaggerated in a quasi trompe l'oeil style—are stripped of their original purpose, prompting viewers to question the material realities and value systems they often take for granted.[3]

In a review of Jeremy DePrez's 2014 solo exhibition Tenant at Zach Feuer Gallery, Art in America critic Raphael Rubinstein praised the artistic diversity and risk-taking in DePrez's work, highlighting the distinct modes of painting on display.[4] Rubinstein noted that DePrez's fearless exploration of multiple artistic approaches stood out from the trend of neatly delimited bodies of work, demonstrating a deep engagement with both the history of painting and his personal experiences.[5]

Exhibition History

[edit]

DePrez has exhibited extensively in the United States and internationally at the Portland Museum of Art (Maine), Zach Feuer Gallery (New York), Galerie Max Hetzler (Berlin), Luhring Augustine Gallery (New York), Texas Gallery (Houston), White Flag Projects (St. Louis), and Magenta Plains (New York) to name a few.
