Dr. Jitendra Kumar Sahu is a pediatric neurologist, researcher, and professor at the Department of Pediatrics, Postgraduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGIMER), Chandigarh, India. He is a founder of the South Asia allied Infantile Epileptic Spasms Syndrome Research Group.[2] In view of his immense research contribution to the child neurology as a young child neurologist at national and international level, he has been awarded the prestigious John Stobo Prichard Award by the International Child Neurology Association in May, 2024.[3] He also serves as co-chair of the International League Against Epilepsy (ILAE) Telemedicine Task Force.[4] The government of India has selected him as a recipient of the prestigious Rashtriya Vigyan Puraskar: Vigyan Yuva-Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar for the year 2024 in Medicine, which is the highest distinction conferred upon young scientists for demonstrating exceptional potential in science and technology.[5]


Early life and education

Prof Sahu received his MBBS degree from Pt. J.N.M. Medical College, Raipur, Chhattisgarh, in 2003. He completed his MD in Pediatrics in June 2006 and his DM in Pediatric Neurology in December 2009, both from the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), New Delhi. He has also undergone specialized training and fellowships at various prestigious institutions, including Great Ormond Street Hospital in London, Queensland Children's Hospital in Brisbane, and Nationwide Children's Hospital in the United States.[6]

Career

Dr. Sahu joined PGIMER, Chandigarh, as a faculty member in 2011 and was promoted to professor in July 2021.[6]

Awards and recognition

Dr. Sahu has received several awards, including:

  • He is selected as a recipient of the prestigious Rashtriya Vigyan Puraskar: Vigyan Yuva-Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Award in Medicine for 2024 by the Government of India.[5]
  • The John Stobo Prichard Award (2024) and Sheila Wallace Award (2016) from the International Child Neurology Association.[3][7]
  • The Bruce S. Schoenberg International Neuroepidemiology Award (2023) from the American Academy of Neurology.[8]
  • The Bernard D'Souza Award (2019) from the Child Neurology Society, USA.[9]
  • The Ihsan Dogramaci Research Award (2017-18) from the International Pediatric Association Foundation.[10]
  • The Association of Child Neurology-All President's Award (2022).[11]
  • The Dr. Ashok Panagariya Memorial Young Scientist Award (2022) from the Indian Academy of Neurology.[12]
  • The Dr. HB Dingley Memorial Award (2014) from the Indian Council of Medical Research, New Delhi.[13]
