Biography

[edit]

João Carvalho was born in São Miguel, Azores. In 1967, at the age of three, he emigrated with his family to Montreal, Quebec. The Carvalho family moved to Windsor, Ontario four years later, where his mother was a seamstress and his father worked at the Ford Motor Company. Growing up close to Detroit offered João the opportunity to frequently see major rock bands perform live and his interest in music grew. He learned how to play guitar and later started a rock band while attending the University of Windsor and St. Clair College.

When he was 21, João and the other members of his band moved to Toronto, seeing this as a path to success. But during their recording sessions, João became fascinated with the recording and mastering process. One of the recording engineers, Jamie Stanley, took João under his wing and taught him the craft. The two eventually became partners at a studio called Umbrella Sound. João started mastering studio recordings there in 1994. In 2003, he set off on his own, opening João Carvalho Mastering. He and three partners also built a recording studio complex in Toronto called Revolution Recording that opened its doors in 2012.

João lives in Toronto with his family and says he has "a somewhat (un)healthy passion for cars and fine audio equipment".[1]
