Joanna Miłosz-Piekarska born 3 April 1952 in Warsaw, Poland, is a Polish writer and a poet living in Australia.
She is a daughter of Andrzej Miłosz and niece of Czeslaw Miłosz. She is also a god-daughter of Leopold Tyrmand.
Joanna Miłosz-Piekarska lived in Warsaw, Poland till 1967, when she emigrated with her mother, Hanna Miłosz first to London and then to Melbourne, Australia. In 1971 she returned to live in London and then in 1972 returned to Warsaw where she went to study English Philology at Warsaw University. During her time in Warsaw she wrote song lyrics, music was composed by Tomasz Ochalski and in later years by Adam Slawinski. She was first published in literary monthly magazine Odra in 1975.
She graduated in 1979 with an MA in American Literature. 1979-1981 she worked as an assistant to John Darnton, New York Times correspondent for Eastern Europe. Her daughter Natalia (with husband Andrzej Piekarski) was born on 16th December 1980. In November 1981 they travelled with little Natalia to visit Hanna Miłosz in Melbourne. When Marshal Law was imposed in Poland on the 13th December 1981 Joanna Miłosz-Piekarska has decided not to return to Poland. Her husband, Andrzej Piekarski went back to Poland in 1983, but after staying for a year has again returned to Australia. However the marriage did not last. In 1986 Joanna opened actors' agency called JM Agency. Joanna travels to Poland every year, with an exception of 2 years of Covid restrictions. She is an author of books of poetry and prose.
