Jorge Richard P. Guerrero
Jorge Richard Pobre Guerrero is a contemporary Ilokano fiction writer who is best known for his award-winning Ilokano short stories and flash fictions. He is widely regarded as an activist author because most of his stories reveal irregularities in the government. Guerrero is considered one of the most active writers at present in the Ilocos Region of the Philippines.
Guerrero was born in Laoag City on April 23, 1969 - the eldest child of mechanic Amelio Datoc Guerrero and Bible teacher Alma Guevarra Pobre. He attended Mary Help of Christians College Seminary in Dagupan City but left after a few years to continue his philosophy studies at the University of the Philippines in Diliman. After completing his philosophy studies, he pursued law at the Northwestern University in Laoag City.
He worked in broadcast media for over two decades, primarily as news anchor for the regional stations of ABS CBN and GMA. However, he also briefly worked at DZMM, Hoy! Gising! and CNN Philippines. After retiring from broadcast media, he worked in the government as an agrarian reform officer. He also contributes articles to the Ilokano magazine Bannawag.
Most of his articles sparked criticism from fellow government workers, yet they received recognition from award-winning bodies. Guerrero has received awards from Apolonio and Iloreta Awards for Ilokano Literature, ALVIYA Literary Foundation, Mario Abinsay Albalos Foundation Literary Awards, Gawad Bienvenido Lumbera, and Carlos Palanca Memorial Awards for Literature.
Guerrero is frequently invited to deliver lectures to students, aspiring writers and even professional writers on the evolution of literature.
