The Massacre of July 2024 in Bangladesh

[edit]

What and why is the Anti - Quota Movement?

In 2018, Bangladeshi students initiated widespread protests demanding the abolition of the quota system for government jobs. This system reserved 56% of positions for various groups, including a 30% quota for descendants of freedom fighters from the 1971 Liberation War. While intended to benefit those who sacrificed for the nation, the quota had been extended to include grandchildren, leading to concerns about fairness and meritocracy. Critics argued that the selection process for freedom fighters was opaque and prone to corruption, resulting in disproportionate representation of this group in government jobs.

Following a court order suspending the quota, the government reinstated it in early July 2024, sparking renewed protests. The situation escalated when the Prime Minister labeled the protesters "Rajakars," a highly derogatory term for collaborators with the Pakistani forces during the Liberation War. This inflammatory rhetoric inflamed public opinion and led to a significant increase in protest participation.

How it became violent?

The protests turned violent as the government deployed security forces, including the police, Border Guard Bangladesh, and the paramilitary Ansar, to quell the demonstrations. The ruling party's student wing, the Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL), was also implicated in attacks on protesters. A nationwide curfew was imposed, accompanied by an internet shutdown, and several protest leaders were detained. These actions sparked widespread condemnation and accusations of human rights abuses.

In describe: The Prime Minister's issuance to protect her autocrat regime firstly she deployed her goons called the Bangladesh Catra League (BCL) which is a murderous student wing of the ruling party AWL (Bangladesh Awami League) who directly hurt the peacefully protesting students with knifes, machetes, sickles, sticks, rods, pipes, swords and even guns in groups. [1][2] She then deployed the police, BGB (Border Guard Bangladesh) alongside with The Ansar Bahini (A defense force) and many more. After she lost the battle with them she directly ordered curfew all over the country for many days straight. Each and every single force was deployed with shoot in sight order. The internet was cut off to stop spreading information. The 6 coordinators of the main protesting group naming themselves " Indiscrimination Student Protest " were caught by the DB police. They were beaten and injected with slow poison. Mass genocide was happening in the darkness of communication. Within the curfew and emergency court was called and the declaration of only 7% quota where the Liberation War Quota was 5% was declared. The student protesters and the government's economy became weak because of the curfew. After the curfew was taken off everything started with a great rage. As there were more than 900 students killed according to the independent investigations. The Government however stated that this are being done by political organizations such as Jamaat-e-Islami and Islamic Chatra Shibir.
