The Karamoja Peace and Technology University (KAPATU) is a private university under construction in Uganda. The institution was founded in 2023 by the Catholic Lawyers Society International (CLASI), a Kampala-based non-government organisation in collaboration with the Roman Catholic Diocese of Kotido and the government of Uganda.[1][2][3]

Location[edit]

The main campus of KAPATU is under construction in Losilang Ward, Kotido Municipality, in Kotido District, in the Karamoja sub-region in the Northern Region of Uganda.[1][2]

The town of Kotido is located approximately 110 kilometres (68 mi) northwest of the city of Moroto, the sub-regional capital.[4] This is about 517 kilometres (321 mi) northeast of Kampala, the capital city of Uganda.[5]

Overview[edit]

The decision to establish KAPATU was conceived within CLASI in early 2023 and was first made public on 30 April 2023.[6] The main objective is to create a center of excellence in learning and research to spur investment and productivity in the Karamoja sub-region, the least-developed and poorest in the country, as of 2023. The teaching of peaceful development and conflict resolution, is expected to disseminate knowledge and lead to acquisition of non-violent life skills in Karamoja itself and in the African Great Lakes Region, and the wider Horn of Africa Region.[1]

CLASI collaborated with the Catholic Diocese of Kotido, who provided the land on which the institution is being built. The NGO also recruited serving high-ranking Uganda government officials, including the county's president[7], vice president, prime minister and and chief justice to serve in specific, roles in the creation of the university.[1][2]

The university is expected to carry out hands-on, primary research into the causes of the persistent "insecurity" prevalent in the Karamoja sub-region, despite allocation of mitigating resources, including the presence of the Ugandan military, on-the-ground.[8]

Academics[edit]

The university is expected to start with the following faculties.[1][9]

  1. Faculty of Computer Science and Applied Technology.
  2. Faculty of Engineering.
  3. Faculty of Oil, Gas and Metals Industry.
  4. Faculty of Environment, Agriculture and Veterinary Medicine.
  5. Faculty of Health Sciences, Nursing and Nutrition.
  6. Faculty of Business and Entrepreneurship.
  7. Faculty of Education
  8. Faculty of Peace and Security Studies.
  9. Faculty of Law.
