From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Khaddar Samsthanam is a term coined by Late Shri Uppuluri Venkata Krishnaiah (1895-1963) to represent a way of living system which is fundamentally indigenous to the land and people of the Indian sub-continent. It was during the period of swadesi movement, wherein attempts were being made by the freedom fighters of those times to free their motherland from the foreign rule and thereby re-establish the lost and destroyed Indian indigenous economic life, this institution has come into existence.

Shri Uppuluri Venkata Krishnaiah has established Khaddar Samsthanam in the year 1927 near Bezwada. During the later stages of his life he also mentioned that he got immensely inspired by the text "Hind Swaraj" coming from M.K. Gandhi which played a key role in shaping his visions for the future of independent India.

There, at Khaddar Samsthanam intense work was executed and carried out to re-establish the lost and destroyed origins of the Indian indigenous economic life. Fundamentally starting with the khaddar movement called on by Shri M.K. Gandhi, Khaddar Samsthanam as a combination of few more individuals(For example: Late Shri Uppuluri Ramasastry) and their families aimed at re-creating a model village which is not only self-sufficient in basic amenities of life like food, clothing and shelter but also producing individuals with rich Indian ancestral knowledge and all technical skills like handicrafts and other ancient occupations.

During the 2nd year of its operation itself, Shri Uppuluri Venkata Krishnaiah could make Mr. Gandhi to visit Khaddar Samsthanam in the year 1929 during his tour to the southern part of India especially towards the Andhra area which was in the Madras presidency.

During its first two decades of operation(i.e till India attained freedom in 1947), Khaddar Samsthanam has attracted a considerable number of leaders of those times like Andhra Kesari Tanguturi Prakasam, Shri Babu Rajendra Prasad, Annie Besant, Swami Seetharam, Shri J.C.Kumarappa, Pattabhi Sitharamayya etc., It's also during that same period Khaddar Samsthanam as an institution had also contributed its own share of genius for the subject matters like INFLATION, DE-CENTRALIZATION, CURRENCY SYSTEM VS MATTER SYSTEM, PROBLEMS OF CURRENCY, PADDY AND CLOTH BANKING SYSTEM VS CURRENCY BANKING SYSTEM, RURAL ECONOMICS VS URBAN ECONOMICS, CONCEPTS OF DUAL CURRENCY, BARTER SYSTEM VS RUPPEE SYSTEM etc.,

In the year 1948, Uppuluri Venkata Krishnaiah had given a treatise form to his decades of research on reviving the Indian indigenous economic and spiritual living system and named it "గ్రామ తత్త్వం". This text has been regarded as the most insightful and intriguing works ever produced in the fields of village economics, de-centralization, education, medicine, human psychology etc., of those times. Moreover an attempt has also been made by him to establish a "Village university" which would assimilate the lifetime research material of not only his work but also those of all who have essentially contributed to the village movement led by M.K.Gandhi in light of achieving freedom for the country India. In addition, Khaddar Samsthanam had also played a key role in the programs like "FIRKA DEVELOPMENT SCHEME" implemented by Shri Tanguturi Prakasam.

After the demise of Venkata Krishnaiah, his 4th son, who had also served as the secretary to Khaddar Samsthanam for a period, Late Shri Uppuluri Sri Ramamurthy(1935-2016) had inherited the spirit and purpose of institution setup by his father and throughout his life continued implementing it upon his children and other family members.

In the year 2002, the eldest son of Late Shri Uppuluri Sri Ramamurthy, who also turned out to be a sincere follower of the same ideology, ANANTAM has founded a publication named "GRAMA SWARAJYA PUBLICATIONS" being immensely influenced and inspired by his father, grandfather and Khaddar Samsthanam right from his childhood.

Such a publishing house during the later periods has evolved into the "GSP House".
