Kim Hankyul (born 29 March 1990, Busan, South Korea) is an artist based in Oslo, Norway. Intentionally derailing from visual linearity, Hankyul's works explore themes such as violence, alienation, colonialism, religion and media community. In Hankyul's works, sound expressions are often coupled with machine failure in an effect-cause relation. Interactions between physical materials instantly form the experience of mishearings, which recurs through the persevering dysfunction. The topics have been explored to include survival and poverty, physical and mental anomalies, natural catastrophes, wars and deaths.
Education
[edit]Kim Hankyul holds a bachelor in Aesthetics from Seoul National University and a master in Art from The Faculty of Fine Art, Music and Design, University of Bergen.
Career and Awards
[edit]Kim Hankyul was awarded the Kistefos Prize at The Autumn Exhibition in 2021 with the work 'Tempest'.[1], and the 2022 Sparebankstiftelsen DNB's grant for his work 'AV Buddha'[2], before being included in the Astrup Fearnley Collection[3]
Recent works have been presented in solo exhibitions in Norway, including Nitja senter for samtidskunst, Entreé Bergen, Atelier Nord and EKKO Festival, as well as international group exhibitions including Salón Acme (Mexico City), Pal Project (Paris), After the Butcher (Berlin) and Galleria Sculptor (Helsinki).
