Kim Ji-hye (Korean김지혜, born November 3, 1980)[1] is a South Korean actress, singer, and model. She entered the entertainment industry as a high schooler, modeling for magazines. In 1998, she starred alongside Kang Sung-hoon of Sechs Kies in the film Seventeen, while also appearing in various variety shows. Kim made her singing debut in 2000, as part of the trio To-ya [ko]. In 2002, Kim decided to focus solely on an acting career, leaving her previous company.

Career

[edit]

Kim's career began in her second year of high school, when a magazine company scouted her after a friend sent Kim's picture.[1] Shortly after her modeling debut, she was cast by a record label and rehearsed as part of a girl group for two months before moving to another company, where she decided to focus on acting.[1] In 1998, she starred in the movie Seventeen alongside Kang Sung-hoon of the boy band Sechs Kies, playing an aspiring backup dancer.[2] As she did not know how to dance, she practiced 3–4 hours a day for a month before the role.[3] At the same time, she appeared in variety shows such as Super TV Sunday Is Fun and Good Friends.[3]

In March 1999, Kim went to Japan in order to train for a girl group called To-Ya, who were to have their debut in the country.[4] In November, To-Ya released their debut single, "Are You", in Japan.[5] To-Ya made their Korean debut in August 2001,[6] and at the end of the year won Best New Artist at the 2001 Seoul Music Awards.[7] The group disbanded while preparing their second album—Kim stated on a 2016 episode of Two Yoo Project Sugar Man that "the company's situation suddenly got worse", and that "as [To-Ya] continued to promote, the choreography team and makeup team started disappearing one by one".[8]

In the summer of 2002, Kim announced she would focus solely on acting and switched her company to Fandango Korea.[9]

In 2004, she appeared in the film He Was Cool. After the role, she took a three-year hiatus; she returned to the entertainment industry in 2007 with a digital single.[10]
