Draft:Kishor Patwardhan

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Kishor Patwardhan is an Ayurvedic physiologist and researcher working as a professor at the Institute of Medical Sciences, Banaras Hindu University.[1]. He is noted for his calls for the modernisation of the theory and practice of Ayurveda to align it with the scientific method by the integration of modern medicine with Ayurveda[2] and the deletion of outdated pseudoscientific concepts from Ayurveda curriculum[3]

In 2022, he authored a paper in the Indian Journal of Medical Ethics titled "Confessions of an Ayurveda professor"[4], in which he refuted his own previous teachings on the formation of blood and semen[5], and criticised Ayurvedic physicians' attempts to explain tridosha theory using concepts found in allopathy such as immunology due to its lack of falsifiability[6]. The controversial article received mixed responses from the Ayurvedic community.[6][7][8][9]

During his career at Banaras Hindu University, he has also written multiple articles in newspapers and academic journals about making Ayurveda an evidence-based system of medicine[10], criticising the practise of modern medicine by AYUSH practitioners[11], and the lack of research output from newer Ayurvedic institutions.[12]

Patwardhan is an editor of the Indian Journal of Medical Ethics[13] and the Journal of Ayurveda and Integrative Medicine[14]. He received the Dr. C. Dwarikanath Award in the year 2019 and is the co-ordinator of the "Ayurveda Network" project funded by the Ministry of Education.[1]
