Kuban Airlines Flight 5719 crashed during a go-around just off of the runway at Gyumri Shirak International Airport on December 26, 1993. The aircraft was a Antonov An-26B registered RA-26141, a twin-engine turboprop airliner built in 1983 in the Soviet Union. [1] One passenger survived, while the other 30 passengers and 5 crew were killed.
Event
[edit]The aircraft was on a domestic scheduled cargo flight from Krasnodar International Airport to Gyumri Shirak International Airport.[1] On approach to Gyumri, during the night and bad weather, the plane was not properly aligned with the runway, and the pilots attempted to perform a go-around procedure, but the aircraft stalled and crashed into a river bed roughly 3,000 meters behind the runway threshold .[1] Just one of the 36 occupants survived the crash.
Investigation
[edit]The investigation had discovered that there were 31 passengers on board the aircraft, when the manifest for the plane's cargo load only stated there were five, as well as two cars that were in the cargo hold were not properly secured. Because of the overloading, the plane was very unstable, and the pilots could not properly align themselves with the runway at Gyumri. The investigation noted that the pilots were also attempting to make a landing in conditions that were below Kuban's minimum operating conditions, and that the go-around procedure was initiated too late.[2]
