Li Xiang (Chinese: 李想) is a Chinese architect and the founder of the design office X+Living and furniture brand, XiangCASA. She has gained recognition for her works through many awards, such as the Prix Versailles Award and Architecture MasterPrize award.

Early life and education[edit]

Li Xiang’s interest in painting from a young age cultivated her interest in design but it was not until her post-secondary studies that she recognized her interest in architecture.[1] She attended a high school abroad when she was 15 years old and later began her studies in architecture in Malaysia and the United Kingdom.[1] Li Xiang graduated from Birmingham City University with a Bachelor of Engineering in 2009 before she returning to China to work at the China Construction Institute.[1]

Career and achievements[edit]

X+Living and XiangCASA[edit]

After working in the United Kingdom and China for several years, Li Xiang founded X+living (also known as Weixiang Architectural Design (Shanghai) Co.) in 2011.[1] The office X+Living is derived from Li Xiang’s initials - X standing for the unknown and explorative attitude of her work, and L as living and ‘a way of life.’[2] The office consists of a team of almost 70 people.[1]

Design Community Involvement[edit]

In addition to design, Li Xiang also involves herself with the larger design community and participated as a jury in several design awards, such as Dezeen Awards, Archiproducts Design Awards, Frame Awards, and Successful Design Awards. In addition, she was also a recipient of multiple rewards, some of note are the Prix Versailles Award and Architecture MasterPrize award.[3]

Design ethos[edit]

“My works always seem to present a magical, dreamy, and even surreal style and it is because what I want to create is not just a beautiful space, but a spatial experience for visitors.”[2]

Design creates value[edit]

Li Xiang’s work involves the exploration of artistic expression, practicality, and creating new paradigms for futuristic design.[2] The inspiration for her work is derived from her ambition to make the world a better place by making space both a beautiful and spatial experience based on the image of a world she would like to see.[2] It is noted that Li Xiang’s workflow approach is considered unconventional when compared to other architectural practices, where the initial design phase involves mainly working digitally to allow for flexibility and rarely ever on paper.[2]

Major works[edit]

An interior shot showing the staircase bookshelf inside the Shenzhen Zhongshuge

Shenzhen Zhongshuge Bookstore (2021)[edit]

Following the idea of value creation, Li Xiang hopes to use her work to resurface and highlight the values of a place, such as that of the Shenzhen Zhongshuge bookstore. The project focused on the goal of bringing the cultural story of the city to the forefront, acknowledging the efforts and labour of migrants who struggled within Shenzhen's history - beginning from a small fishing town to a renewed economic zone starting in the 1980s.[4]

Park Zoo Hotel (2018)[edit]

Li Xiang often uses her work to convey deeper layers of societal awareness or histories, with one example being the Zoo Park Hotel in Hangzhou, where she brings forth the awareness of wildlife conservation as the main theme for the design, paying tribute to the importance of preserving endangered animals.[5]
