Biography[edit]
Sawatsky started her career as a writer for the animated series, Delilah & Julius (2005-2006),[1] where she also served as an executive story editor.[1] She then wrote for several other animated shows, such as Doki (2016), PJ Masks (2015), George of the Jungle (2015), and ToonMarty (2017)[1]. Live-action comedies she wrote during that time include, Sophie (2008), and Mohawk Girls (2015).[1]
In 2017, she co-created the show, Wishfart, with John Hazlett and Dan Williams, which follows the adventures of a teenage leprechaun and his friends who try to undo the chaotic consequences of their wishes.[2] The show was nominated for three Canadian Screen Awards for Best Writing, Animation in 2019[3][4]. She also co-executive produced and wrote for the show Ollie’s Pack (2020-2021), which is about a boy who can summon monsters from another dimension with his backpack.
In 2021, she co-created and executive produced The Guava Juice Show, starring the popular YouTube personality Roi Fabito.[5]
At the 28th Stuttgart International Festival of Animated Film in 2021 she won the screenplay award for Butterfly Tale (2023), along with Heidi Foss, with whom she shares the writing credit.[6] Butterfly Tale tells the story of a monarch butterfly who can't fly, and so stows away so he can experience the yearly migration.[citation needed]
In 2023, Butterfly Tale won first prize at the Chicago International Children's Film Festival.[7]
