Lionel Sabatté, born in 1975 in Toulouse, is a contemporary artist, painter, sculptor and French designer. A graduate of the École nationale supérieure des beaux-arts de Paris in 2003, he lives and works between Paris and Los Angeles.

Biography[edit]

Lionel Sabatté became known with La Meute, a work exhibited in 2011 at the Jardin des Plantes in Paris, as part of the FIAC.^[1] This work represents a pack of wolves made from dust bunnies.^[2] Dust, which is found in many of his sculptures and drawings, is not the only residual material that the artist uses. 1 euro cent coins, fragments of dead skin and nail clippings^[3], tree stumps or burnt wood are indeed all elements that constitute his repertoire of materials.

His work revolves around the notion of life and the transformations of matter that the passage of time causes. From the residual materials he uses, he gives life to a bestiary made up of hybrid creatures: unicorns made of concrete and turmeric^[4], fish from the abyssal depths made with iron and coins, butterflies repaired with pieces of dead skin, wolves and swans in dust and, since 2016, human silhouettes in scrap metal and concrete. Lionel Sabatté combines all of these materials in unexpected ways, creating works that are both delicate and disturbing.^{[citation needed]}

Painting also plays an important role in his work, opening a dialogue with his drawings and sculptures:

For him, painting is an abysmal “factory of depths”, whether we speak of historical or geographical depths. It will draw essential intensity from the depths of the seas. In this pictorial practice, produced flat, there are so many paint fluids and chemical reactions which give rise to aqueous or stringy surfaces, bursts of jellyfish, concentrations of toxic as well as stellar colors. The painting is a story of the original depths of life, while the forest of trees reminds us of the power of infinite transformation of life on Earth"

Lionel Sabaté thus strives to bring all of his works into dialogue in a permanent interconnection. His research on the mineral, the animal, the organic in short, gives rise to poetic, sensitive, disturbing works which participate in a global reflection on our condition and the place we occupy in our environment, as evidenced by his work The Pack of Wolves in Dust presented in 2011 at the Natural History Museum in Paris, which has become an emblematic work of questions linked to environmental issues. It was through this that he was offered an exhibition at the Paris Aquarium in 2014, which was particularly covered by the press and one of the themes of which was to draw attention to the overexploitation of maritime resources. A tour in the city of La Rochelle on the theme of water and natural resources was then offered to him. Finally, more recently, Lionel Sabatté benefited from a personal exhibition at the Musée de la Chasse et de la Nature, “La Selection de Parentèle”, reflecting on life and evolution.

Lionel Sabatté has been working since 2017 on a new series, Rust paintings, oxidized metal plates. These works were notably presented during a personal exhibition at the Galerie Ceysson et Bénétière in Paris in 2018. His recent works, large oxidized bronze birds presented in 2019 in Lyon as part of the exhibition “Who knows how many flowers must have fallen” (New Franco-Chinois Institute, Bullukian Foundation, Musées Gadagne) and in Toulouse through the exhibition “Lionel Sabatté: sculptures” (Centre d’art nomade) lead him to redefine his relationship with sculpture and to constantly reinvent his artistic practice.

Lionel Sabatté has exhibited his work in France and abroad and has been the subject of numerous press articles and interviews in the media: in the written press (Le Monde^[5], Le Figaro^[6], Libération^[7], Télérama^[8], Le Parisien^[9], Artpress^[10], Beaux Arts magazine^[11], etc.) and on television (France 3 Régions^[12]^[13], BFM TV^[14], Arte^[15], etc.), and on the radio (France Culture^[16]^[17]).

Lionel Sabatté has been represented in Paris by Galerie Ceysson et Bénétière since 2018.
