Little Hell Canyon Bridge in rural Yavapai County, Arizona is a Warren deck truss bridge that was built in 1923. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1988.[1]
It was designed by the Arizona Highway Dept. and it was built or fabricated? by the Monarch Engineering Co. Architecture: Warren deck truss Criteria: event, architecture/engineering
The Little Hell Canyon Bridge near the former community of Drake, Arizona is a Warren truss bridge which was built in 1923. It was documented in the Historic American Engineering Record in 1987 and was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1988.[2][1]
It is located on an abandoned section of U.S. Route 89 over Hell Canyon, 8 miles (13 km) northwest of Drake, in rural Yavapai County, Arizona.[2]
It was documented by Clayton B. Fraser who prepared the MPS study also.
It was listed as part of a 1987 study of historic road bridges in Arizona.[3]
The study also led to listing of the 1923-built Hell Canyon Bridge about .5 miles (0.80 km) southwest of Drake.
The Hell Canyon document notes that "The Hell Canyon Bridge functioned on U.S. Highway 89 until its replacement by a route realignment in 1954. It now stands abandoned, carrying intermittent local traffic."
Criteria: event, architecture/engineering
It runs north-south and is parallel to the Little Hell Canyon Railroad Bridge, a bridge of the Santa Fe Railroad; the road bridge is at a lower level about 40 feet (12 m) to the east. They are both in the Prescott National Forest, just south of its border with Kaibab National Forest.[4]
The Hell Canyon Bridge, .5 miles (0.80 km) southwest of Drake, was also built in 1923 and is listed on the National Register.
