Luva Nahid Choudhury (Born 5 June 1962) is a Bangladeshi architect, cultural advocate, and singer known for her contributions to the promotion of art, culture, music, theatre, and literature in Bangladesh.[1] She currently serves as the Director-General of the Bengal Foundation.[2]
Early Life and Education
Luva Nahid Choudhury was born in Karachi but migrated to Bangladesh in 1973. She is the daughter of Anis Choudhury, a noted playwright and journalist, and Razia Choudhury, a teacher at a public school.[3] Choudhury pursued her education in architecture at the Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET), where she graduated in 1986.[4]
Career
After completing her education, Choudhury worked in government service for ten years. In 1998, she joined the Bengal Foundation as its Director. She currently holds the positions of Trustee and Director-General at the Bengal Foundation[5]
Choudhury's career in cultural advocacy has been marked by her role in various organizations:
• Governing Board of BRAC: She has served as a member of the governing board of BRAC[6], one of the largest non-governmental development organizations in the world.
• ICE Media and Bengal Publications: She heads these leading publishing houses, contributing to the literary and media landscape of Bangladesh.[4]
• Friendship NGO: Choudhury is an executive member of this non-governmental organization that focuses on providing services to remote communities in Bangladesh.[7]
• World Craft Council - South Asia Subregion: She serves as the Vice President, advocating for the promotion and preservation of traditional crafts in the region.[8]
• Bengal Institute: She is an executive member of The Bengal Institute for Architecture, Landscapes and Settlements.[4] 'Bengal Institute is a transdisciplinary forum for the study and design of the environment.
Luva Nahid Choudhury has been involved with the Bengal Foundation for 25 years, contributing to the organization's impact on the cultural landscape of Bangladesh.[1] Under her leadership, several significant initiatives have been undertaken, including Bengal Classical Music Festival[9], Bengal Bikash, Bengal Parampara Sangeetalay[10] - an institution dedicated to preserving and teaching traditional Bangladeshi music, and numerous awards and grants[11] to support artists, writers, and researchers.
Singing Career
She is known for singing the songs of Pancha Kobi[12]. She has released two albums to date[13].These are - Sadhera Malati Gethechi[14] – Published in 2017 Jakhan Tumi Gaoao Gan[15]– Published in 2017
Choudhury has performed at numerous cultural events, with the most notable being a tribute program for Pandit Ravi Shankar at the prestigious Royal Albert Hall in the UK.[16]
Awards
In 2016, Luva Nahid Choudhury received the Anannya Shirshodosh Award.[17]
