From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The M1858/61 Kavalleriesäbel was a cavalry saber utilized by the Austro-Hungarian Empire during World War I. Adopted in 1858 and subsequently replaced in 1861, this edged weapon played a significant role in the cavalry regiments of the Austro-Hungarian Army.

The M1858/61 Kavalleriesäbel was eventually succeeded by the M1862 Infanteriesäbel. The latter featured a straight, single-edged blade with a brass hilt and a leather grip. This replacement was specifically utilized by the infantry regiments of the Austro-Hungarian Army.

Description[edit]

The saber featured a curved, double-edged blade with a steel hilt and a wooden grip. With similarities to the Prussian M1852 Cavalry Sword used by the German Empire, the M1858/61 Kavalleriesäbel had a total length of approximately 40 inches (1,000 mm), a 34-inch (860 mm) blade, and weighed around 3 lb (1.4 kg). Its brass scabbard had two rings for attachment to a belt or saddle.
