Magnopus is a Los Angeles-based company specialising in virtual production, virtual reality (VR), augmented reality (AR), and mixed reality (MR)[1].
History
[edit]Magnopus was founded in 2013 by Oscar-winning visual effects artists Ben Grossmann, Alex Henning, and Rodrigo Teixeira[2].
The company has worked with filmmakers such as Jon Favreau[3] and companies like Pixar[4], and NASA[5] to create spatial experiences. In July 2021, Magnopus acquired REWIND, a British virtual and augmented reality (VR/AR) specialist.[6]
Magnopus has made notable contributions to the film and entertainment industries, particularly in virtual production. [7] The company was also included in TIME Magazine Best Inventions in 2022 for Connected Spaces[8].
Virtual Production on The Lion King
[edit]According to Epic Games, Magnopus is one of the world's leading studios in virtual production[9], a technique that uses digital technology to support the filmmaking process. One of Magnopus's significant projects is its work on Disney's 2019 remake of The Lion King[10]. Directed by Jon Favreau, the film utilised virtual production techniques to create a photorealistic, computer-animated version of the classic story. Magnopus designed and implemented the virtual production system that allowed the filmmakers to explore and shoot scenes within a virtual environment, simulating a live-action filming experience.[11]
The virtual production system won a AIS Lumiere Award in 2019.[12]
Virtual Production on Fallout
[edit]Magnopus also contributed to the virtual production for the Fallout television series, produced by Amazon Studios and Kilter Films[13]. The company created four environments in Unreal Engine for use on an LED volume: the picnic area and vault door scenes in Vault 33, the cafeteria setting in Vault 4, and the New California Republic’s base inside the Griffith Observatory.[14]
Magnopus won two Gold Telly Awards in 2024 for its work on Fallout.[15][16]
Virtual Production on Westworld Season 4
[edit]For Westworld Season 4, Episodes 7 & 8, Magnopus worked with Visual Effects Supervisor, Jay Worth, to build a Times Square set 30 years in the future [17].
