Manchester is a residential low-income neighborhood of Calgary, Alberta, Canada. The community straddles both the southeast and southwest quadrants of Calgary and neighbors the industrial community of Manchester Industrial to the east, south and north.[1]

Community boundaries[edit]

The community of Manchester is located geographically in both the southeast and southwest quadrants of Calgary. The community is bounded by 42 Avenue South to the north, 58 Avenue South to the south, Macleod Trail to the west and the Canadian Pacific train-tracks (CP r.o.w.) to the east. Manchester Industrial sits to the east, south and north of the community, meanwhile the communities of Elboya, Parkhill and Windsor Park sit to the west of the community.[2]

Population and Demographics[edit]

As of the 2021 Calgary municipal census, the community of Manchester had a population of 950.[2]

Income[edit]

As of the 2021 Calgary municipal census, Manchester had an average median household income of $44,000, sitting among the lowest in the city with the Calgary average sitting at $98,000. The amount of households spending 30%+ on shelter was 39% sitting in contrast to Calgary's average of 23%. 39% of Manchester households made less than $40,000 per year, compared to only 15% of Calgary. 29% of applicable households were low-income in Manchester, in contrast to Calgary which was 9%. Manchester had an unemployment rate of 15%, in contrast to Calgary's unemployment rate of 13%; however the unemployment rate of Manchester's female population sits significantly higher than its male population of 21% vs 10%.[2]

Demographics[edit]

As of the 2021 Calgary municipal census, 42% of Manchester's population were immigrants compared to 32% of Calgary's population. 46% of Manchester's immigrant population was born in Africa, in contrast to only 12% of Calgary's population.[2]

Transit[edit]

Manchester is geographically located in close proximity to two Calgary CTrain stations - 39 Avenue South and Chinook stations.

The bus route 10 - a major mainliner route which runs between Downtown and Anderson Station - runs along the community's western boundary along Macleod Trail. Alongside this, the bus route 81 runs through the community through 50 Avenue SE and 58 Avenue SW. The bus route 9 briefly skims the community along 58 Avenue SW.[3][4][5]
