Mandy Yin is a Malaysian-born restaurateur, author and TV chef based in London, United Kingdom.[1][2][3] She founded her food business Sambal Shiok in 2013, before opening her first restaurant Sambal Shiok Laksa Bar in 2018.[4] She has appeared in several television cooking programmes and is the author of Sambal Shiok: The Malaysian Cookbook.[5][6][7]

Early life

Yin is Malaysian with Peranakan Nyonya and Southern Chinese heritage. She was born in Petaling Jaya, a suburb of Kuala Lumpur and moved to London with her family when she was 11 years old.[3] Her father was born in Malacca, Malaysia and her mother was born in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.

Career

Yin studied law at University of Southampton and was a corporate lawyer until 2013 when she changed careers.

Yin launched Sambal Shiok as a street food concept in 2013 specialising in chicken satay burgers before transforming it into a pop-up laksa noodle bar between 2015 to 2018.

In December 2016, Yin’s pop-up restaurant in Harringay Green Lanes received a positive review from Jay Rayner of The Observer.[8]

Yin was named by The Evening Standard Magazine as one of the top tastemakers in the London food scene in June 2017.[9] She also worked with Grace Dent to host a series of supper clubs for The Evening Standard’s London Food Month in 2017.

After a series of sell-out runs for her pop up laksa bar across London, Yin opened Sambal Shiok Laksa Bar in Highbury, Islington in 2018 to critical acclaim for her signature Peranakan Nyonya curry laksa.[4]

Sambal Shiok Laksa Bar won Ching He Huang’s Best Innovation Award at The Golden Chopsticks Awards 2019 and North London’s Favourite Restaurant Award in Time Out’s Love Local Awards 2021.[10][11]

In 2022 Yin was named as one of CODE Hospitality's 100 Most Influential Women.[12] She also worked with Tom Parker-Bowles to host a private dinner as part of Mastercard’s Hidden Gems Dining Experience series in 2022.[13]

In 2023 Yin was named as one of "the hottest chefs in London" by Time Out.[14]

Food writing

Yin’s debut book Sambal Shiok: The Malaysian Cookbook was released on 14 October 2021 by Quadrille.[7] The book was nominated for several food writing awards:

Sambal Shiok: The Malaysian Cookbook was selected as Jamie Oliver Cookbook Club’s cookbook of the month for February 2022.[18][19] Sambal Shiok: The Malaysian Cookbook was also published in Dutch.

Yin has also written for many other publications and food magazines including The Guardian,[20] The Observer Food Monthly,[21] Waitrose Food Magazine,[22] Great British Chefs,[23] The Evening Standard,[24] National Geographic Traveller,[25] Vittles[26] and Olive Magazine.[27]

Broadcasting career

Yin is known for her appearances on various cookery programmes. She is a regular guest chef on BBC’s Saturday Kitchen hosted by Matt Tebutt and a guest judge on BBC’s Masterchef: The Professionals.[1]

In 2024 Yin also appeared on news programmes (BBC Newsnight, ITV News) talking about the challenges faced by independent hospitality.[28]

In 2019 she hosted an hour-long episode of Nadia’s Family Feasts with Nadia Sawalha on ITV.[29]

In 2016 she appeared in John Torode’s Malaysian Adventure on UK Good Food Channel.[24]

Teaching and demos

Yin is a regular guest chef for the Jamie Oliver Cookery School and has also taught lessons at the Taste of London food festival.

Personal life

Yin lives in North London with her husband Owen and their son Rhion.
