Associate Professor Marc Russo is an Australian physician specialising in pain management and a leader in his field.

Dr Russo was born in Sydney[1], Australia, and studied Medicine at the University of Sydney.

He is based in Newcastle, where he is the Director of Hunter Pain Specialists, Hamilton Day Surgery Centre and Genesis Research Services. He is also Co-Director of the Innervate Pain Management Program.

In 2022 Dr Russo announced that he would freely share his innovative dorsal horn dendrite stimulation (DHDS) waveform for use in spinal cord stimulation, rather than patent it, as he wanted it to be a gift to physicians, industry and patients. It is deployable on all current SCS devices within the product range.[2]

Among Dr Russo’s achievements in the specialty of pain management are developing Australia’s first successful multidisciplinary pain management model and completing two successful world-first spinal cord stimulator device implantations in Newcastle, NSW, Australia in 2011, establishing him as a leader in his field.

Doctor Russo is regularly asked by media to contribute his expert opinion on pain management. He is an advocate for multidisciplinary pain clinics.[3] and has spoken publicly about best practice in the use of medicinal cannabis.[4]

As a researcher, Dr Russo has a special interest in treating and researching Complex Regional Pain Syndrome. He has been a principal investigator of numerous clinical trials assessing new treatments for it.[5]

Dr Russo’s favourite sport is rugby union, he loves ice-cream and his favourite travel destination is Bora Bora.[11]
