Marianna Malina (b. September 18, 1967, Kholmsk, Sakhalin) is a Ukrainian writer, translator, and screenwriter. She is the winner of the 2008 Coronation of the Word national contest for her mystical novel The Purple Children.

She is a two-time winner of the Coronation of the Word contest in the Novel category. She authored the popular translation of William Haley's poem "Invictus" into Ukrainian, which became the anthem of the Invictus Games.

Personal life[edit]

Malina was born in the Russian town of Kholmsk on Sakhalin Island. Her father was a sailor and her mother was a teacher of English and German. She spent her childhood years in Ukraine in the village of Khomutets, Poltava region, then in the cities of Huliaipole and Skadovsk. She received a degree in radio engineering from the Zaporizhzhia College of Electronic Devices. Later, she majored in business economics at the Kharkiv National Academy of Municipal Economy.

In 1987, she married and moved to Yevpatoria, where she published the newspaper City of Masters and was the editor of the magazine UVO (Ukrainian Fantastic Observer). Now she lives in Kyiv. She is a member of a number of literary associations.

Writing career[edit]

Malina was written novels, novellas and short stories, in the genres of science fiction and fantasy.

In 2008, she won the national competition "Coronation of the Word" for her mystical novel about children with psychic abilities "Purple Children". The novel was translated into Greek and published by the Greek publishing house KINHTPO, translated by Iryna Miroshnychenko and edited by Angelos Skempris.

In 2015-2016, she moderated the events of the Intellectual Discussions project.
