Marwan Krunz is a Regents Professor in the Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE) Department at the University of Arizona (UA).[1] He holds the Kenneth VonBehren Endowed Professorship in the ECE department and has a joint appointment as a professor of the Computer Science department[2] and is an affiliated member of the University of Arizona Cancer Center.[3]

M Krunz received his B.S. in Electrical Engineering from the University of Jordan, Amman in 1990, and his M.S. and Ph.D. degrees from Michigan State University in 1992 and 1995 respectively.[1]

Carrer and Research

M Krunz serves as the co-founder and lead director of the Broadband Wireless Access and Applications Center (BWAC), dedicated to tackling essential research challenges and pioneering innovative technologies for the next generation of wireless systems (5G and beyond). From 2008 to 2014, M Krunz held the position of UA site director for "Connection One" (C1). This initiative involved the participation of five universities (UA, ASU, OSU, RPI, and Univ. of Hawaii).[4]

M. Krunz's research has a primary focus on integrating artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning into wireless systems. Recently, he has actively participated in projects involving innovative applications of deep neural networks and reinforcement learning for tasks such as waveform/protocol classification and adaptation.

M. Krunz has coauthored over 300 published or accepted journal articles and peer-reviewed conference papers, showcasing his extensive scholarly output. His significant impact is evident in his co-invention of 10 issued patents, along with numerous pending patent applications and invention disclosures. Notably, he holds a current h-index of 61, with his research garnering over 13,000 citations.[5] Funding for his research has been secured from various sources, including the National Science Foundation (NSF), Department of Defense (DOD) agencies (ARO, AFRL, AFOSR), NASA, Qatar Foundation, South Korea, and several prominent U.S. and international corporations. The total research funding under his leadership exceeds $20 million.[1]

From 2017 to 2020, M. Krunz assumed the role of Editor-in-Chief for the IEEE Transactions on Mobile Computing,[6] a prominent journal within the wireless and mobile networking field. In this capacity, he directed a board of over 70 associate editors. Prior to this, he held editorial positions for IEEE Transactions on Cognitive Communications and Networking (2015–2018),[7] IEEE Transactions on Network and Service Management (2010–2014), IEEE Transactions on Mobile Computing (2006–2011), IEEE/ACM Transactions on Networking (2001–2008), International Journal of Distributed Sensor Networks (2013–2014), and Computer Communications Journal (2001–2011).[8] M. Krunz played pivotal roles in chairing numerous leading international conferences.

M. Krunz has delivered keynote addresses at ISCIT'17, UNET'15,[9] ICCSP'15, CRESS 2014 (1st IEEE International Workshop on Cognitive Radio and Electromagnetic Spectrum Security), CCW 2012, IFIP Wireless Days 2011, and WiMesh 2009. Notably, he played a pivotal role on the 2015 IEEE Fellows Evaluation Committee for the Computer Society. His involvement as a panelist and moderator extended to various international conferences, such as WCNC 2016, INFOCOM 2009, and SECON 2009. Beyond his conference contributions, he is actively engaged in reviewing proposals and serving as a panelist for diverse funding agencies, including NSF, ARO, AAAS, Science Foundation Ireland, and more. Under his leadership, 29 Ph.D. dissertations and M.S. theses were successfully completed. He provided mentorship to 6 postdoctoral researchers and numerous other people. In addition to his academic endeavors, M. Krunz showcased his entrepreneurial spirit by participating in three startup companies. He maintains an active consultancy role, offering expertise to companies in the telecommunications and wireless industry.

Awards and Honors

M. Krunz has been the recipient of numerous prestigious awards and recognitions throughout his distinguished career. Notably, he achieved IEEE Fellow status in the class of 2010 and served as an Arizona Engineering Faculty Fellow from 2011 to 2014. In 2013 and 2014, he was honored as an IEEE Communications Society Distinguished Lecturer. His outstanding service to the IEEE Communications Society's Technical Committee on Communications earned him the Outstanding Service Award in 2012. In 2010, M. Krunz was bestowed with the esteemed Visiting Chair of Excellence ("Catedra de Excelencia") from the University of Carlos III de Madrid, Spain. The year 2011 brought the distinction of a Fulbright Senior Specialist, allowing him to engage with the King Abdullah II School of Information Technology at the University of Jordan. Earlier in his career, he was a recipient of the NSF CAREER award from 1998 to 2002. His contributions to research have also been acknowledged with the Best Paper Award at the ACM International Conference on Modeling, Analysis and Simulation of Wireless and Mobile Systems (MSWim'18) and the 2007 International Conference on Cognitive Radio Oriented Wireless Networks and Communications (Crown-Com'07). He was also a runner-up for the Best Paper Award at several other conferences. Notable institutions where he has held short-term positions include include the University of Technology Sydney, Australia (2016–2018), University of Paris V (2013), INRIA-Sophia Antipolis, France (2011, 2008, and 2003), University of Paris VI (2006), HP Labs, Palo Alto (2003), and US West Advanced Technologies (1997). Additionally, during his Ph.D. studies in 1994, he was honored with the International Thoman Fellowship Award from Michigan State University.
