Matteo de Mayda

[edit]

Matteo de Mayda (born 1984, Treviso, Italy) is an Italian photographer based in Venice. His visual research focuses on social and environmental causes. He has participated in numerous international exhibitions and received several awards for his work.

In 2019, he published Era Mare, a book documenting the high water in Venice. In 2020, ARTRIBUNE selected him as the best young Italian photographer of the year. In 2021, he was chosen as one of the FUTURES talents by CAMERA (Italian Center for Photography) and won the Italian Sustainability Photo Award with There's no calm after the storm. In 2022, he won the British Journal of Photography International Award and was shortlisted for the Gabriele Basilico Prize.

In 2024, Matteo de Mayda published "Brilla Sempre", a book about his mother, Serenella, who passed away in 2023 after eighteen years of illness. de Mayda's photographic work focused on his mother's workplaces, where she worked as a cleaner in residential buildings. He describes this book as "a form of group therapy, where building administrators and tenants, who generously remembered her, took the place of a therapist and patients."

Still in 2024, he will publish the book There's no calm after the storm thanks to funds raised through a crowdfunding campaign. By mixing archival and reportage photos, satellite and microscope images, community testimonials, and scientific theories, There's no calm after the storm investigates the long-term consequences of the Vaia storm. Produced over five years, its aim is to analyze what happened with the necessary time to weigh causes, responsibilities, consequences, opportunities, and future perspectives, raising awareness among the public about the climate emergency and the delicate balance between human action and ecosystem resilience.

Matteo de Mayda has taught at several private and public institutions, including La Sapienza University in Rome, IUAV University of Venice, NABA (Nuova Accademia di Belle Arti) in Milan, and Spazi Fotografici.

de Mayda has collaborated with numerous international magazines including The New York Times, Financial Times Magazine, Internazionale, M Le magazine du Monde, Zeit and Vogue.
