Maurits Jan Westveen known professionally as Mau P, is a Dutch DJ and producer born October 26 1996 in Amsterdam, Netherlands. He has made a significant impact in the electronic music scene, particularly in the Tech House genre. Mau P developed a deep passion for dance music at a young age, influenced by a household filled with talented musicians and his own early involvement with multiple instruments.[1][2]

Before adopting the Mau P label, Westveen found success under the alias Maurice West, primarily within the Big Room genre. His early work in this field garnered considerable acclaim, including standout performances at major European music festivals. The evolution to Mau P in 2022 signified a pivotal shift in his musical style, transitioning from Big Room to Tech House. This change was not just in name but reflected a deep transformation in his artistic voice and adaptability to the dynamic realms of electronic music.[3]

The North American tour following the release of "Drugs From Amsterdam" was a resounding success, featuring sold-out shows in major cities such as Miami, New York, Las Vegas, and Los Angeles. Westveen's subsequent projects, including "Gimme That Bounce" and remixes of tracks by Calvin Harris and Swedish House Mafia, further cemented his reputation as a versatile and skilled artist within the Tech House genre. His 2023 collaboration with Kevin de Vries, "Metro," released on the Afterlife label, reinforced his status in the upper echelons of house music. The track gained extraordinary popularity, partly attributed to a serendipitous meteor shower during its performance at Miami Music Week.[4][5]

Mau P's relatively short yet impactful career, characterized by a diverse discography and exceptional DJ performances, positions him as a formidable and influential figure in the contemporary house music landscape. His ability to adapt and excel in a highly competitive industry not only underscores his status as a prodigious talent but also as an artist of enduring interest and potential within the evolving world of electronic music.

Westveen grew up in a musical family and played piano, guitar, and drums during his childhood.[6] At 14, he discovered dance music and began producing music and DJing. Initially, he worked as a graphic designer, creating flyers and posters for local clubs, which also let him perform as a DJ.[7] When one of the clubs organized a small festival with 3,000 attendees, he performed on the main stage. At that time, he was one of the few artists still representing the Big Room genre. After an initial release under Armada, he was signed by W&W's label Mainstage Music in 2015. His subsequent singles, including collaborations with Maestro Harrell and Dbstf, each reached the Beatport charts. His track "Yin Yang" achieved the first #1 position on Beatport in the Big Room category. Another collaboration with Kshmr was part of the latter's EP "Materia." He also released remixes for Headhunterz and Tiësto on Ultra and Musical Freedom. His track "Voices In My Head" was described by We Rave You magazine as an "entertaining" Big Room track with "powerful pop vocals," while Digital Journal highlighted its "remarkable drop" and support from artists like Martin Garrix, Hardwell, and Tritonal. In 2017, Maurice West played at major festivals across Europe, including SLAM! Koningsdag, Sziget, and New Horizons, as well as at Tomorrowland and as a guest in Kshmr's show on the main stage. He also toured China.

In 2018, Maurice West and SaberZ released a Big Room version of the Eurodance classic "The Rhythm Of The Night," which, according to Dance-Charts, was particularly convincing in its drop and has since been a regular part of the live sets of W&W, Dimitri Vegas & Like Mike, Quintino, and Hardwell. Following this, he collaborated with Hardwell on a new version of Cascada's "Everytime We Touch," which received positive audience reactions at Tomorrowland. The track was then picked up by other DJs such as Gareth Emery, Diesel, and Salvatore Ganacci at events like EDC, Lollapalooza, or Electric Zoo. Both "Rhythm Of The Night" and "Everytime We Touch" reached the Beatport charts, topping the Big Room category and remaining in the Top 100 for more than 379 and 590 days, respectively. "Everytime We Touch" also garnered at least 90 million views on Spotify and YouTube. At the end of 2018, Maurice West released "The Kick" on Rave Culture, the successor to Mainstage Music, and played at major festivals worldwide, including Ultra Miami, World Club Dome, Tomorrowland, and a tour in Asia.

In early 2019, he collaborated with W&W on "Matrix," which was also a part of Nicky Romero's live sets. Both "The Kick" and "Matrix" reached #1 on the Beatport Big Room charts. He remixed a song by Dimitri Vegas & Like Mike and the trance classic "ResuRection" by Planet Perfecto Knights, which Dance-Charts named one of the best festival tracks of 2019, frequently used by Armin van Buuren. He also founded his own label, Euforika, releasing several of his tracks, including "Euforika2000." Until early 2020, he performed at Electric Love, Creamfields, Sziget, and the World Club Dome (Winter Edition), as well as in renowned clubs like Bootshaus, Ministry of Sound, Avant Gardner, Echostage, Papaya, Neuraum, and Ushuaïa Ibiza. His last show as Maurice West was in 2022 at Mysteryland.

Alongside his career as a Big Room DJ, Westveen worked on projects to experiment with other genres. He secretly played Minimal, House, and Trance at small events. Eventually, he produced his own tracks for this purpose, aiming to realign his career. On August 19, 2022, Westveen released "Drugs From Amsterdam" under his new alias Mau P on Repopulate Mars. He explained the name change was due to the stylistic shift from Big Room to House. The name comes from "Maupie," his nickname among friends. Before its release, "Drugs From Amsterdam" went viral on social media. It was first played by Acraze at Sensation in Amsterdam and was then picked up by numerous DJs, including Tiësto, John Summit, and DJ Snake. It reached #1 on the Beatport Tech House charts and remained in the Top 100 for 469 days (as of December 2023). It was the seventh most successful song of the year on this platform. On Spotify, the track has 137 million views. A music video and remixes by Reinier Zonneveld and Armand van Helden were released. Dancing Astronaut highlighted its "most memorable house vocals of the year." "Drugs From Amsterdam" was the third most played track by DJs in clubs and festivals in 2022. Billboard included it in its 50 best dance songs of the year, and Dancing Astronaut listed it in its Top 100. Dancing Astronaut also named Mau P as one of the "Artists to Watch in 2023." He received several awards and nominations at the EDMAs in 2023 and a gold record in the USA.

In early 2023, Mau P released "Gimme That Bounce" on Insomniac Records, a follow-up single stylistically similar to "Drugs From Amsterdam." Dancing Astronaut had previously titled it as one of the most anticipated IDs of the year. It achieved #1 on the Beatport Tech House charts and has been in the Top 100 for 317 days (as of December 2023). The Music Essentials magazine highlighted "Mau P's creative ingenuity and production skills." It was the most used track by DJs that year. Following this, Mau P toured North America, performing at Marquee Las Vegas, Beyond Wonderland, Ubbi Dubbi, EDC Mexico, and EDC Las Vegas. His performances at Space Miami and Q Nightclub Seattle were discussed by DJ Magazine and DMNW, respectively.

After remixing Calvin Harris and Ellie Goulding's "Miracle," he released his third single on John Summit's label Off The Grid. "In Your Mind Is Dirty" showcased his "ability to blend elements from various genres," demonstrating his versatility. The track reached #2 on the Beatport charts and maintained the #1 position in the Mainstage category for over a month. He then collaborated with German producer Kevin De Vries on "Metro," released on Afterlife and part of the liveshows of label owner Tale Of Us. The Afterlife show at Miami Music Week received media attention, especially when a meteor shower occurred during the track, which was reflected in the song's cover. "Metro" also reached #2 on the Beatport charts and #1 in the Melodic House & Techno category. It was one of the most played tracks of the year, being the most played at Tomorrowland, followed by "Drugs From Amsterdam." Mau P performed on the Freedom Stage at Tomorrowland, as well as at Parookaville, Nameless, Mysteryland, Creamfields, EDC Orlando, and in clubs like Bootshaus, Hï Ibiza, and Amnesia. Following this, he released "Dress Code" on Chris Lake's label Black Book. Forbes wrote an article about him on this occasion. The Tech House track reached #1 on the Beatport charts again. Mau P also produced a remix for Swedish House Mafia's "Ray Of Solar."

In the Top 101 Producers list by 1001tracklists, Mau P ranked #5 among the most played producers by DJs in 2023. In the Top 100 DJs poll by DJ Magazine, he was repeatedly named the "rising star DJ/producer of 2023" by Timmy Trumpet, Nicky Romero, and Morten. On November 11, 2023, he played the 1LIVE DJ Session.
