Mendix is a low-code application development platform that provides tools for organizations to build web and mobile applications. Mendix was founded in 2005 in Rotterdam, the Netherlands.[1][2]
Mendix's US headquarters are located in Boston.[3][4]
In 2018, Mendix was acquired by Siemens.[5][6]
History[edit]
Mendix was founded in Rotterdam, the Netherlands, by Roald Kruit, Derek Roos, and Derckjan Kruit.
Roald Kruit, a freelance software developer at the time, noticed a communication disconnect between software developers and end users, which often led to dissatisfaction with the developed applications. Using a visual development language, Mendix’s founders wanted to create a platform that would enable better collaboration and understanding between developers and business users.[7][8]
In October 2011, Mendix raised $13 million with its first round of venture capital funding.[9]
In August 2018, the company's co-founder and CEO announced its acquisition by Siemens or $730 million in cash.[10] The deal was finalized later that year. It was reported that Mendix would continue to operate as an independent entity. [11]
In February 2024, Raymond Kok was appointed Mendix's new CEO.[12]
Platform Features[edit]
Mendix offers a range of features tailored to support the entire software development lifecycle (SDLC). It has a visual model-driven integrated developer environment (IDE) with tools for businesses to build, test, iterate, and deploy applications[13][14][15]. The visual interface allows wider range of people across organizations participate in software development and meet the increasing demand for application enhancements and updates, allowing skilled developers to focus on more complex tasks.[16]
In 2014, Mendix introduced a free community edition of the platform.[17]
In 2016-2023, analyst firm Gartner named Mendix one of the leaders in its Magic Quadrant report for Enterprise Low-code Application Platforms (LCAP).[18] In 2023, analyst firm Forrester named Mendix one of the leaders in "The Forrester Wave™: Low-Code Development Platforms for Professional Developers, Q2 2023" report.[19]
Mendix has partnered with other technology providers Red Hat[20][21] and AWS[22][23]. At CES 2024 in January 2024, Siemens and AWS announced they were integrating Amazon Bedrock, a machine learning platform used to build generative artificial intelligence (AI) applications on AWS cloud computing platform, with Mendix.[24]
