- Comment: Most of the sources (YouTube, Medium, Urban Dictionary) are, to put it bluntly, not of good enough quality for an article. Chaotıċ Enby (talk · contribs) 15:44, 31 March 2024 (UTC)
Meta-irony is a complex form of irony that is self-referential where the speaker or author is aware of the irony in their own statements and intentionally plays with the audience's expectations.[1] It involves using irony in an ironic way, creating a layer of meaning beyond the initial ironic statement.[2][3]
Meta-irony is seen as the next layer of irony after Post-irony.[4] It's rise to popularity is largely attributed to the widespread adoption of Meme culture, especially in Gen-Z humour on Short-form video platforms in the early 2020s.[5][6] The adoption of meta-irony has been particularly widespread on Instagram Reels due to the reportedly Toxic masculinity culture of the platform, which has been likened to that of 4Chan.[7][8]
