Dr Michael Gray BA, MA, PhD, AKC, PGCE, FCCT (born 2 February 1984) is a British educator and contemporary historian. He is the 38th Headmaster of Hereford Cathedral School, one of Britain's oldest independent schools, founded in 1384. He was Director of Studies at Harrow School from 2019 to 2021.
Gray is an expert in Holocaust education and is the author of two books and numerous peer-reviewed articles on the subject. His research on the Holocaust has received over 200 academic citations. In addition to his published work, he has worked closely with various Holocaust organisations including the UCL Centre for Holocaust Education, Holocaust Learning UK, and the Holocaust Educational Trust.
Gray is deeply interested in the country of Rwanda, its experience of genocide and its post-genocide recovery. He has delivered addresses on this subject to MPs within the House of Commons, in guest lectures at various universities, and at the 24th official commemoration service in London. Additionally, he has worked with the First Lady of Rwanda and her Foundation to support girls’ education across the country.[1]. He is a patron of A Partner in Education, a Rwandan NGO[2].
Early life and education
[edit]Gray was born in Ashford, Middlesex, and educated at Bishop Wand Church of England School, Sunbury, followed by King’s College, London, where he was awarded First Class Honours in BA History. In 2014, he gained a PhD in Holocaust Education at UCL Institute of Education[3]. He also has an MA from UCL and obtained a PGCE there in 2006.
Life and Career
[edit]Gray's first teaching appointment was at Halliford School in 2006 where he taught History and Politics. In 2009 he moved to St Edward’s, Oxford, and became Assistant Housemaster and master in charge of scholars before starting at Harrow School in 2013. In 2014 he was appointed Head of Politics at Harrow, then Academic and Universities Director and, ultimately, Director of Studies (Deputy Head Academic) in 2019[4]. He joined Hereford Cathedral School in September 2021 as its 38th Headmaster. He also serves the school as CEO[5].
In May 2023, Gray stood for election as Conservative Party Candidate in in the Central Ward of Herefordshire Council Elections. He increased the vote share by 9.8 percentage points compared to 2019[6].
He is married to Angharad, an NHS doctor.
