Moein Jalali was born on October 1, 1987, in Tehran. He is an international Iranian architect who has won global awards and is a renowned judge in the field of architecture worldwide. He is among the architects who pursue architecture with a philosophical approach and considers the effort for good architecture as an effort for humanity.
Early life and education
[edit]Moein Jalali was born in Tehran. His father, Ezatollah Jalali, was an officer in the Iranian Air Force and a successful lawyer. Moein's mother studied Iranian architecture, and with two aunts who were also architects, he grew up in an artistic environment. His father's profession and discipline instilled qualities in him that later made him a successful international judge. At the age of 32, he married Minoo Kar, his classmate from his bachelor's degree program, and they had a son at the age of 36. From a young age, he had a strong interest in music and pursued it professionally, eventually becoming a songwriter and composer.
He graduated with a diploma in Mathematics and Physics from one of the most prestigious high schools in Iran, Alborz High School. He then studied architecture at the International University of Qazvin, where his talent earned him a national architecture competition win at just 21 years old. He completed his master's and Ph.D. in architecture in Iran.
Professional Milestones
[edit]Moein Jalali initially joined Shar Consulting Engineers and was hired to draft the initial design of a park. However, when the company's CEO, Arch. Zaghi, saw his design, he was so impressed that he entrusted Moein with the main design of the 70-hectare Abshar Park in Tehran's District 22. This project marked a turning point in his career. Although Moein had initially expressed concerns about his lack of experience for such a large project, with the company's support, he successfully completed it.
Following this project, he experienced a period of stagnation, parting ways with Shar and struggling to secure new projects until the age of 27. His breakthrough came with the Parsian Dental Clinic project, offered by a friend. Seizing this golden opportunity, Moein dedicated himself to creating an impactful work, which won him the Asia Architecture Award in Vienna, Austria, in 2016.[1][2][3]
This success marked the beginning of a shining period in his career, with multiple nominations for global architecture awards.[4][5][6] In 2018, he won the Continental Architecture Award in Barcelona, Spain[7][8][9]
Thoughts and theories of architecture
[edit]He has spoken in various interviews about contemporary Iranian architecture and its main problems. In an article presented at the 2012 conference on "One Hundred Years of Contemporary Iranian Architecture and Urban Planning Conference"[10] titled "Pathology of Contemporary Iranian Architecture,"[11] he initiated an active discourse on critiquing Iranian architecture.
In an interview with Turkey's TV Den Channel, he described architecture as a civilizational component and said, "Throughout history, countries with civilizations have had magnificent architecture."[12]
He also stated in an interview with the Al-Alam Channel that Iranian architecture is one of the three main roots of world architecture and credited Iranian architecture for the development of mosque architecture. He said, "The architecture of mosques as a spatial form originated in Iran."[13]
In another interview with the Al-Alam Channel, he described the role of art as transforming concepts into material form. He said, "In architecture, we transform subjects from the level of intuition to wisdom, from wisdom to knowledge, and from knowledge to science. In essence, we convert concepts into material form."[14][15]
Migration and New Horizons
[edit]After failing to secure major projects for four years starting at age 32 and considering Iran's economic situation unsuitable for architectural progress, Moein, despite his deep affection for Iran, moved to Sofia, Bulgaria, to start a new chapter in his professional life. Known as a distinguished architect in Iran, he has focused more on judging international architecture awards in recent years while being less active in design, such as French Design Awards,[16] FRAME Magazine Awards,[17] Inspireli Awards,[18] International Architecture Associate(IAA),[19] Rome Design Awards.[20]
