Momentum Generation is a 2018 documentary film directed by Michael Zimbalist. It concerned the lives of a group of surfers, the “Momentum Generation,” who changed the surfing culture and industry trajectory. The group was close friends who lived in a house on the north shore of Oahu, Hawaii and became famous in the 1990s and early 2000s. The documentary explores their complex group dynamics and individual journeys. The film premiered at the 2018 Tribeca Festival[1] and debuted exclusively on HBO on Dec. 11, 2018.

The most well-known “Momentum Generation” members appeared in the film. This includes Kelly Slater, Taylor Knox, Shane Dorian, Ross Williams, Kalani Robb, Pat O'Connell, and others. Taylor Steele was also a member of the group who appeared in the film. He filmed the group surfing back in the day and made the videos into movies, which he successfully sold, putting the group on the map. Filming Steele's movies kept the group tight-knit and had a new style compared to all precious surf movies. The movies were fast-paced and rock instead of relaxing island style. They had momentum. They were extensively discussed in the documentary.

The Momentum Generation was the start of a new era in surfing. The surfing style was aggressive and fast-paced. Aerials became normalized. This young group of surfers began to take over from the old generation and quickly rose to the top of the competition. Slater brought surfing into every American home originally back in the day as he rose in popularity, even dating Pamela Anderson. The film has allowed the momentum generation to continue impacting surfing fans and viewers who have never surfed a day. The raw interviews, charming archival footage, and unexplainable mystique of this young group of men taking over and influencing an entire sport continue to influence the documentary film.

Momentum Generation won its first award on the night it premiered in New York at the 2018 Tribeca Film Festival, where it won an Audience Award.
The film won prizes at the Aspen Film Festival, the Santa Cruz Surf Film Festival, the Honolulu Surf Film Festival, the Surfalorus Surf Film Festival, the Florida Surf Film Festival, and the Los Angeles Film Awards.
HBO Sports won the “Outstanding Long Sports Documentary” prize for Momentum Generation at the 40th annual Sports Emmy Awards.[2]
