Muck is a free-to-play video game created by developer and YouTuber Dani (also known as Daniel Sooman. It released on Steam on 5 June 2021[1] for Windows and later received a MacOS and Linux version.[2][unreliable source?]
Premise and Gameplay
[edit]Premise
[edit]Muck is a roguelike survival video game,[3] where you spawn on a island in the middle of the ocean, and try to obtain materials to rebuild the crashed ship to sail away. After rebuilding the ship, you need to collect 5 gems via beating 'guardians' to collect a gem. After finishing collecting the gems, a dragon appears named 'Bob', acting as the final boss.[citation needed]
The players can also challenge 'Gronk', a miniboss wielding two swords.
Gameplay
[edit]The game features a building and crafting system. Users can join 'lobbies' to play with friends,[1][4] albeit it is possible to play in 'singleplayer'.[3][a] It contains procedural generation for the island,[5] acting very similar to the 2011 game Minecraft.[6][7][4] Power-ups are also obtainable with joke names such as 'Spooo Bean'.[8]
Reception
[edit]Muck received an overall positive reception, reportedly having over 16 thousand players online at peak hours in 2021[9] and having over 12 million downloads on Steam.[10] It gained a "very positive" rating on its Steam page[5] from about 70 thousand reviewers,[1][7][8] and once had a very active speedrunning community, holding number 2 on speedrun.com's top speedrunned games.[citation needed]
The game has been praised for its uniqueness with Ali Jones from GamesRadar+ described it as 'a parody low-res survival game' and called the game 'genuinely good'.[11] Sarfraz Khan from GameRant described it the look of Muck as 'colorful visuals and [a] vibrant world'.[12] Many also enjoy Muck due to its ability to run on low-end PCs.[4]
Development
[edit]Development started after Sooman received a comment challenging him to create a survival multiplayer game.[7] Sooman reportedly a few months for it to develop, and it was released on 5 June 2021 on Steam, with a devlog releasing the same day.[13]

Notes
[edit]- ^ Lobbies can be reportedly locked to disallow players to join, effectively making it singleplayer, albeit in technicalility this is not the correct term.
