Muhammad Adnan Butt (born January 6, 1983) is a Pakistani entrepreneur in the media and entertainment industry. He is the CEO of Dot Republic Media, a digital content distributor operating in the MENA and APAC regions. Butt is also the founder of CreatorsOne Studios, a production studio in Abu Dhabi, and serves as the Managing Director of Walnut Media, which focuses on content production.

Early Life & Education

Muhammad Adnan Butt was born into a Kashmiri family. His father, Maqsood Ahmed Butt, was a member of Pakistan's National Football team and worked at the Pakistan Ordnance Factories. The family migrated from Kashmir to Pakistan in 1948. Adnan pursued a Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering from the Ghulam Ishaq Khan Institute of Engineering Sciences and Technology (GIKI), graduating in 2005.

Career

In 2002, while studying at Ghulam Ishaq Khan Institute of Engineering Sciences and Technology (GIKI), Adnan founded the Society for the Promotion of Higher Education in Pakistan (SOPHEP)[1], an organization dedicated to providing on-campus employment opportunities and enhancing interpersonal skills, particularly for students from low-income households and underprivileged areas. Although Adnan graduated in 2005, SOPHEP continued to grow and became one of the largest student-run organizations at GIKI, known for organizing major events such as the Open House, Convocation Ceremonies, and Model United Nations conferences.

In August 2005, Muhammad Adnan Butt began his professional career at Warid Telecom, a subsidiary of the Abu Dhabi Group, where he served as a Senior Executive, developing web and WAP portals, mobile games, and content management projects, until August 2007. He later joined Wateen Telecom, another Abu Dhabi Group venture, from August 2008 to May 2009, managing the syndication of international TV channels, including FOX and National Geographic.

Since July 2009, Butt has been the Director at Mvergence Media in Lahore, where he has been involved in enhancing brand engagement through digital campaigns.[2][3][4] In addition to his work in media and entertainment, Adnan founded Walnut Media in 2010, which gained recognition for its digital marketing efforts,[5][6] including winning the Facebook Studio Award in 2013 for one of the top 20 social media campaigns globally.[7] Walnut Media collaborates with platforms such as Cannes Lions and Eurobest.[8][9] Since January 2011, he has also been the Executive Producer at Walnut Studios, overseeing music production and the development of platforms such as One Music Network, Music Latte, Pakistan Superstar and Walnut Sessions.[10][11][12][13]

In August 2014, he launched Absolute Pakistan, a platform highlighting the stories of ordinary citizens and their contributions to the community.

Muhammad Adnan Butt is currently the CEO of Dot Republic Media, a digital content distributor serving the MENA and APAC regions, headquartered in Dubai.[14] He took on this role in December 2014.[11] From November 2015 to March 2020, Butt served as the Chief Operating Officer at Eyeconic Media, focusing on the digitization of Urdu content. Butt acquired Pak Gamers, a largest online gaming community in Pakistan and became its CEO in November 2016.

He held the position of Chief Operating Officer at Alif Kitab Productions in Lahore from May 2017 to March 2020. Alif Kitab was a joint venture between Butt and renowned writer Umera Ahmed, aimed at promoting independent writers, advancing digital publishing, and creating opportunities for writers from far-flung areas of the country. During the same year, under the banner of Walnut Media, Muhammad Adnan Butt collaborated with Samina Peerzada to launch the project "Rewind with Samina Peerzada".[15] This talk show became one of Pakistan's longest-running talk shows, airing 3 seasons with a total of 205 episodes. The show featured in-depth interviews with a wide range of guests namely Atif Aslam, Mahira Khan, Ahsan Khan, Sheheryar Munawar and more, contributing to Pakistan's media landscape.

In December 2020, Butt founded CreatorsOne Studios in Abu Dhabi, UAE, with the aim of advancing content production in the region.[16] The studio is currently working on "IJ," a full-length English-language film based on the Inspector Jamshed series, an iconic series written by Ishtiaq Ahmed from 1973 to 2015.[17][18][19][20][21] The film was shot entirely in Abu Dhabi,[22] in collaboration with the Abu Dhabi Film Commission,[22] which has also hosted projects like Dune I & II,[23][24][25][26][27][28][29][30][31][32][33][34][35][36] Mission Impossible - Dead Reckoning,[37][38][39][40][41][42][43][44][45][46][47][48][49][50][51][52][53][54][55][56][57][58][59] Fast and the Furious 7,[60][61][62] and 6 Underground.[63][64][65][66][67][68][69]. In 2020, he launched C1 Fitness, which became Pakistan’s first digital fitness network, in collaboration with Alchemists.[70][71] It featured content from fitness instructors, making it a go-to resource for health enthusiasts.[72][73]

From December 2021 till April 2023, Butt has served as a board member at AlterStudios FZ LLC in Abu Dhabi, contributing to the development of storytelling within the GCC region.

Contributions to Pakistani music

Muhammad Adnan Butt has contributed to the Pakistani music industry through various initiatives. In 2013, Walnut Studios launched Music Latte, recognized as Pakistan's first social media musical event.[74] Developed in collaboration with Levi's, the project provided a platform for emerging artists to present their work to a broader audience.[74]

He organized Peace Jam 2014 in July at the Rafi Pir Cultural Complex.[75] The event celebrated Sufi music, emphasizing its role in preserving and honoring spiritual heritage.[75]

In August 2014, Muhammad Adnan Butt produced Pakistan Superstar, noted as Pakistan's first digital music reality show, with support from Universal Music Publishing Group.[76] The show aimed to introduce new musicians to the Pakistani market.[12]

Muhammad Adnan Butt initiated the Walnut Sessions project in 2015, designed to discover and promote new musical talent in Pakistan. As the executive producer, he ensured the project provided fresh musical content to local audiences.[13]
